Lucky Pierre ShenandoahRanger Neddie Rose Westwind Happy HookerRock N Roll Westport Tuna Fishing Opens Mid July Tuna fishing is AWESOME! You go out to the deep water, and when you start pulling up fighter after fighter, it's nothing short of incredible. With no catch limits, you can crank 'em in until your arms give out. In one trip you can bring home enough tuna to last your entire neighborhood for the next year. And you haven't lived until you've had tuna steaks you caught yourself and grilled outside over a bed of charcoal. You Get More Fishing with Us! Unlike most charter offices, our boats leave the night before and motor out while you're sleeping. For a two-day trip, you fish in the morning and in the afternoon of the first day, and then all morning the second day. This means you get THREE full fishing sessions in on a 2-day trip, and FIVE sessions on a 3-day trip. If you're calling around and comparing, make sure you ask about exactly what you're getting. It only costs a little bit more, but in return you get a whole lot more for your time and money. People who are In The Know book with us! Now with four Boats! The Lucky Pierre, Ranger, Neddie Rose and the Happy Hooker are full-time albacore boats from July thru the end of September. We have departures on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays, running two- and three-day trips 40 to 75 miles from our port. We never overbook our trips: we take 10 passengers on the Lucky Pierre and Happy Hooker ; 11 on the Ranger and 12 on the Neddie Rose. Many of our trips are booked the previous year when the guys get off the boat from their trip! Call soon to get the date you want! Departure time varies depending on the boat. Please call the office the week of your trip to check departure times for your boat. Westport Salmon Fishing Opens in Late June Nothing beats the taste of fresh-caught salmon. These fabulous fish not only taste great, but put up a fight and are fun to wrestle into the boat. Plus, with Ocean Charters, you're getting the best! Ocean Charters customers regularly win the Daily and Weekly Fishing Derbies for BOTH King and Silver. Salmon Fishing Starts June 28th this year. This year promises to be one of the best in years, with coho counts like we haven't seen in over a decade! Because this is shaping up to be such a good salmon year, call soon to get your reservation in. Salmon fishing out of Westport is always a great time! Boats depart the dock as soon as everyone's on board: usually around 5:30am. You may board a boat early, IF the Captain or a deckhand is on board. Boats will leave early if all passengers show up early. Boats return between 3 and 4 p.m., earlier if the boat limits out before then. The Fishing Derby is sponsored by the Westport Charterboat Association. Each day during the salmon season, the biggest Coho and the biggest Chinook each win a cash prize of half the tickets sales up to $500. At the end of the season, the biggest Coho and the biggest Chinook each receive an additional $1,500 prize. Tickets cost $5 each, and can be purchased at the office when you check in. Westport Halibut Fishing Opens May 3rd We open this year the first Sunday of May for our halibut fishery. We'll be fishing on Sundays and Tuesdays until quota is met.
Boats depart the dock as soon as everyone's on board, and no later than 4:30am (the office opens at 3:00am). Fish usually average about 25-30 pounds, with a derby-winning halibut upwards of 100 pounds! We fish in 600 feet of water at an area called Gray's Canyon, northwest of our location about 35 miles. Better yet, check in the night before. If you come into town the night before, the office is usually open until 5 p.m., and sometimes later. On Friday and Saturday nights, we'll be open until at least 7 p.m. If at all possible, please check in the night before and get your boarding pass so you can go directly to the boat the morning of your trip. It will save you from having to get up even earlier to avoid the morning checkin lines. Generally, you may board a boat as soon as the Captain or deckhand is aboard, but not before. Boats will leave early if all passengers show up early. BOATS WILL NOT WAIT FOR YOU IF YOU ARE LATE!!! Boats return between 3 and 4 p.m., earlier if the boat limits out before then. Bottom Fishing
If you've ever ordered Fish and Chips from your favorite local restaurant, and thought "Wow; this is good. I'd love to catch some of this myself!" then you need to come bottom fishing with Ocean Charters!
Our Bottom Fishing season in Westport runs from March thru September. The Ling Cod season opens on March 17th this year. Bottom fishing is our lowest cost trip and requires the shortest boat ride to the fishing grounds. We target both rockfish and lingcod on these trips. We run Bottom Fishing Trips 7 days a week.
What to bring
Sun protection, sunglasses, a hat, sunscreen, and lip balm, even on cloudy days. The water reflects and amplifies the sun's rays, so you can get very sunburned if you don't protect yourself. Lunch: Bring a brown-bag lunch, including beverages. You can get a box lunch either night before or the morning of your trip. As with everything else, make sure you leave plenty of time in the morning to take care of this, or, better still, handle it the night before. Drinks: All boats have coffee. Bring all other drinks with you, including bottled water. Make sure you have enough to drink - there's no convenience store once you're out there. Call for the Alcohol policy for the boat that your trip is on. Wear layers: It is best to dress in several layers instead of one heavy coat. This allows you to more easily adjust to the weather as it changes through the day. Raingear and non-slip rubber boots. If you don't have these, bring old clothes and shoes that don't slip. Even on a clear, sunny day, fishing can be a wet and messy business. Cameras or video recorders are a good optional item to have with you. It kind of ruins the fun of catching a huge fish if you don't have a picture. Derby Ticket: Get in our town's "Big fish Contest". Make enough money to pay for your trip! We sell Derby tickets at the office. Fishing Licenses: You are required by the state to have a saltwater or combo liscence when fishing in this area. We sell one day liscences in the office for $9.00. Safety First! Ocean Charters prides itself on having the safest boats and the safest, most experienced Captains possible. Bad weather, including rain and wind, will not cause a trip cancellation. As long as it is safe, the boats will go out. However, if the Captain feels that the situation is not safe, he will cancel the trip. Sometimes, the boats will get out to the "bar" (where the boats cross out of Westport's natural harbor area and into the deep-water ocean) before the Captain can tell for sure if he has to cancel the trip.
