You won't want to miss our 2007 season. Our Westport fishing charter boats are ready to give you the great charter fishing experience you have come to expect from one of Westport's oldest, most respected charter fishing fleets! In the last twelve months, we've added THREE boats to our office, giving us the largest charter passenger carrying capacity in Westport.
Westwind Westport Tuna Fishing Opens July 13th
Tuna fishing is AWESOME! You go out to the deep water, and when you start pulling up fighter after fighter, it's nothing short of incredible. With no catch limits, you can crank 'em in until your arms give out. In one trip you can bring home enough tuna to last your entire neighborhood for the next year.
And you haven't lived until you've had tuna steaks you caught yourself and grilled outside over a bed of charcoal.
You Get More Fishing with Us! Unlike most charter offices, our boats leave the night before and motor out while you're sleeping. For a two-day trip, you fish in the morning and in the afternoon of the first day, and then all morning the second day. This means you get THREE full fishing sessions in on a 2-day trip, and FIVE sessions on a 3-day trip. If you're calling around and comparing, make sure you ask about exactly what you're getting. It only costs a little bit more, but in return you get a whole lot more for your time and money. People who are In The Know book with us!
Now with Four Boats! Our trips are so popular and successful that we've added TWO more boats to the Tuna Schedule! The Hawk II will be doing 6-person trips, and the Ranger will be doing 10-person trips, and the Neddie Rose can take 14 for Tuna fishing excursions. With the Sportfishing Salmon Season expected to be short this year due to commercial and tribal overfishing, maybe this is the year you try stepping up to Tuna! Even with 4 boats, some August dates are becoming filled. Call soon to make sure you get the dates you want.
Boat departure time is between 6:30pm-8:00pm. Please check in at the office by 6:00 P.M. the evening of your departure.
If you have any other questions, please call. --- Thank you & have fun!
Westport Salmon Fishing
Opens July 1st
Nothing beats the taste of fresh-caught salmon. These fabulous fish not only taste great, but put up a fight and are fun to wrestle into the boat. Plus, with Ocean Charters, you're getting the best! Ocean Charters customers regularly win the Daily and Weekly Fishing Derbies for BOTH King and Silver.
Salmon Season. As you may have heard, last year's over-fishing by trawlers and tribes will result in a reduced quota this year, especially for charter fishing. Opening Day is July 1st, and you should expect that it will remain 5 days a week (Sunday through Thursday) for all or most of the season.
Because the season will be shorter, make sure you CALL SOON to get your reservation in. Salmon fishing out of Westport is always a great time, so once the season is set, don't wait! You don't want to miss your chance! And remember -- the Ocean Charters owner and Captians were the ONLY Charter Fishing Association members who voted for an earlier start date. So when you are deciding who to fish with, keep in mind who is the only Charter that puts customers first.
Boats depart by 6:00 a.m. from Float #6, which is right across the street from the office. BOATS WILL NOT WAIT FOR YOU IF YOU ARE LATE!!! It takes time to get everyone checked in and onto the boats, so please plan to check in at the office between 5 and 5:30 a.m. If you come into town the night before, the office is usually open until 5 p.m., and sometimes later. If you check in the night before and get your boarding pass, you can go directly to the boat the morning of your trip, which makes it easier for everyone.
You may board a boat early, IF the Captain or a deckhand is on board. Boats will leave early if all passengers show up early. Boats return between 3 and 4 p.m., earlier if the boat limits out before then.
Fishing Derby The Fishing Derby is sponsored by the Westport Charterboat Association. Each day during the salmon season, the biggest Coho and the biggest Chinook each win a cash prize of half the tickets sales up to $500. At the end of the season, the biggest Coho and the biggest Chinook each receive an additional $1,500 prize. Tickets cost $5 each, and can be purchased at the office when you check in.
Westport Halibut Fishing (Reserve Now for 2008)
Want to haul in a fish bigger than you are? Halibut fishing is physically demanding, but halibut is an extremely rewarding and very tasty fish to land. If you like fishing but have never tried a halibut trip, give it a shot in 2006. You'll never forget it, especially if you reel in one weighing over 100 pounds!
Halibut season is closed for 2007, but opens again in May , 2008. In addition, there may be an incidental harvest allowed in June. This year's season lasted barely more than two weeks. Don't miss it again next year! Call and make reservations NOW for 2008!
Boats depart BY 4:30 a.m. from Float #6 (right across the street from the office). It takes time to get everyone checked in and onto the boats, so please plan to check in at the office between 3:30 and 4:00 a.m.
Better yet, check in the night before. If you come into town the night before, the office is usually open until 5 p.m., and sometimes later. On Friday and Saturday nights, we'll be open until at least 7 p.m. If at all possible, please check in the night before and get your boarding pass so you can go directly to the boat the morning of your trip. It will save you from having to get up even earlier to avoid the morning checkin lines.
Generally, you may board a boat as soon as the Captain or deckhand is aboard, but not before. Boats will leave early if all passengers show up early. BOATS WILL NOT WAIT FOR YOU IF YOU ARE LATE!!! Boats return between 3 and 4 p.m., earlier if the boat limits out before then.
Bottom Fishing
If you've ever ordered Fish and Chips from your favorite local restaurant, and thought "Wow; this is good. I'd love to catch some of this myself!" then you need to come bottom fishing with Ocean Charters!
Our Bottom Fishing season in Westport runs from March thru September. The Ling Cod season opens on March 17th this year. Bottom fishing is our lowest cost trip and requires the shortest boat ride to the fishing grounds. We offer several different types of trips, including sea bass only and sea bass/ling cod combination. Boats depart seven days a week, at 7am.
What to bring
Sun protection, sunglasses, a hat, sunscreen, and lip balm, even on cloudy days. The water reflects and amplifies the sun's rays, so you can get very sunburned if you don't protect yourself.
Lunch: Bring a brown-bag lunch, including beverages. You can get a box lunch the morning of your trip at any of several places: Coley's, right next door to the office; at Castaways; or at the Inn of the Westwind. As with everything else, make sure you leave plenty of time in the morning to take care of this, or, better still, handle it the night before.
Drinks: All boats have coffee. Bring all other drinks with you, including bottled water. Make sure you have enough to drink - there's no convenience store once you're out there. Alcohol is permitted on the boats; on the Lucky Pierre and Hawk II, beer and wine only please.
Wear layers: It is best to dress in several layers instead of one heavy coat. This allows you to more easily adjust to the weather as it changes through the day.
Raingear and non-slip rubber boots. If you don't have these, bring old clothes and shoes that don't slip. Even on a clear, sunny day, fishing can be a wet and messy business.
Cameras or video recorders are a good optional item to have with you. It kind of ruins the fun of catching a huge fish if you don't have a pictureand the Derby winnings to prove it.
We provide all fishing gear. All needed gear and bait are provided on the boats. If you have gear of your own that you would like to use, you are welcome to bring it, but you must provide your own lead, leaders, and barbless hooks as well.
Safety First! Ocean Charters prides itself on having the safest boats and the safest, most experienced Captains possible. Bad weather, including rain and wind, will not cause a trip cancellation. As long as it is safe, the boats will go out. However, if the Captain feels that the situation is not safe, he will cancel the trip. Sometimes, the boats will get out to the "bar" (where the boats cross out of Westport's natural harbor area and into the deep-water ocean) before the Captain can tell for sure if he has to cancel the trip.
Licenses
Everyone who fishes is required by the State of Washington to have a Washington State Saltwater Food Fish license for all ocean fishing (except albacore tuna). If you have one, be sure to show it when you check in. If you do not have one, you can purchase a 2-day license for $8 at the Ocean Charters office when you check in.
