James River Fishing Lodge and fly fishing in Central Virginia for Smallmouth Bass, Catfish and Carp.
James River Fly Fishing Lodge
Rockcliffe Farm Retreat offers relaxing recreation in the foothills of Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains. Groups can enjoy James River fly
fishing, swimming, hiking and bird watching. You may also want to bring your bicycle, canoe, or horse to enjoy the beautiful forested
landscape along our many trails and country roads.
Your group can visit for the day, stay overnight, or for an extended stay in our cozy Lodge. The Lodge is ideal for friends vacationing
together, family reunions, church and business retreats, school groups, honeymooners, and artists of all sorts.
We are easily accessible (within 30 minutes) from the Town of Appomattox and the City of Lynchburg, Virginia.
Our mission is to preserve this property from development, retain as much contiguous forest as possible and provide a location for
everyone to enjoy the quiet joys that can only be experienced by being in the woods. James River Fishing
Do you like successful fishing trips? Who doesn’t? We do and that’s why this is our favorite place to fish.
The fish here are abundant, the types of river terrain vary, the water clarity excellent much of the year, and access is good. Pro fishermen
will find plenty of excitement and first-timers have gotten hooked here. There’s nothing nicer than a summer day on the James River. Just ask
our guests!
Common local fish are:
- Small- and largemouth bass
- Catfish (flathead, blue, channel, and yellow)
- Shad
- Huge “wild” carp (Englishmen, are your listening?)
- Gar
- Pickerel
- Perch, and various sunfish
James River Fly Fishing
Guide
Orvis-certified fishing guide LE Rhodes is available for a great day of James River fly fishing you won't soon forget. Lunch, snacks, and equipment
included in price.
Many varied rock formations create shallow (a few inches), quick runs with hideout eddies, and deep (27 feet), slow holes, providing both
streamlike fishing with flies or spinners, or deeper structured lake-like fishing for the flatheads (35+ pounds) and that hide-out record
smallmouth.
Guests may snorkel to find the hideouts in the clear, warm, summer waters, or take a timeout at "Jacuzzi Falls" (a Class I
rapids just upstream from us) after a tough day of landing innumerable smallmouths.
Winter fishing... For the very hearty, dedicated, patient fisherman! As the temperature drops, so generally do the fish. Into slow deep holes
and channels. It’s still possible to catch big cats and senior bass. Things pick up in March and April. Book early.
James River Canoeing and Family Trips
We offer canoeing and kayaking for all experience levels. You can rent canoes and we also have a few kayaks. We'll outfit you with
paddles and life jackets and also show you the best spots on the river for your experience level.
This is not Disney World. It’s a place to be with your family and share time together in a quiet, secluded, interesting setting. We hope
you’ll find a homey feel here, in which you can relax and find hours fly by, maybe just sitting on the patio listening to the sounds of nature
around the Lodge.
It’s very serene at the Lodge, with stars easily visible at night. Families enjoy the campfire in front of the Lodge, and kids find endless
outdoor activities they would never think of doing at home in their normal routine.
