FISHING PROGRAM
Bung Sam Lan Lake one of the most extraordinary fisheries in the world. It is a lake of about 20 acres converted nineteen years ago from a swamp. It is stocked with a huge variety of native Thai and imported fish. Giant Mekong Catfish (15-100 kg) is a “tow truck” of a fish that every angler should try once in a lifetime. In addition, there are Striped Catfish (5-17 kg), Giant Siamese Carp (20 -100 kg), other Thai species.
Snakehead and Jungle Perch are fished in Srinakarin Reservoir near the Burmese border. There, in a huge valley covered by a tropical forest, is a 50-mile long artificial lake that was created by damming part of the valley where two rivers meet. In this lake, there are a thousand coves and channels, creating a perfect habitat for hundreds of different species; one of which is the snakehead. This region is totally wild and there are few tourists, hotels or lodges, only local small fishing villages. Arriving there in the early afternoon, we’ll settle into a typical teakwood floating house. Then we’ll head out on the lake to spend the rest of the afternoon topwater fishing. Fishing boats here are powered by Yamaha engines. The boatmen-guides are all Snakehead experts. The Giant Snakehead (4 kg-15 kg) is a unique and amazing predator. Giant Snakehead can grow to nearly one meter long, and are extremely tough and hardy predators. It is considered to be one of the best fighting freshwater fish by local anglers. The Srinakarin Reservoir is also the home of the very elusive Cobra Snakehead, and the current world record of over 11 pounds was caught there during a FishQuest trip in March 2007.
Already one of our top destinations for multi-species fishing, Thailand just a whole lot better with our discovery of a new small lake stocked with a variety of native and exotic predator fish. This lake is teeming with Arapaima (Pirarucu) over 300 pounds, and Amazonian Red Tail Catfish over 100 pounds. In addition, there are Thai Red Tail Catfish and Black Pacu up to 40 pounds, and Surubi Catfish, Arowana, Red Pacu and Baramundi up to 20 pounds. There are even some small peacock bass up to about 7 pounds, and several other exotic species including the Giant Gorami. he lake is reserved for lure and fly fishing only, with few exceptions.
IGFA record hunters will find some good opportunities on fly tippet and line class and some junior categories. Thailand and Malaysia have already produced 11 world records for FishQuest clients. The new Predator Lake is a perfect year-round complement to the Bung Sam Lan fishery, where Mekong catfish, Striped catfish and Siamese carp are our prime target species. And naturally we’re rearranging our Giant Snakehead expeditions to incorporate this exciting new day fishery, so you’ll get more bang for your buck.
