Kamchatka Russia Fly Fishing Guide

Kamchatka Russia Fly Fishing Guide

fishingOuzel Expeditions began in1977. This marks our 35th year in business. Ouzel Expeditions became the first western guide service to operate in Kamchatka in 1991. We were looking for great salmon runs but couldn't keep the gigantic Rainbow Trout off our hooks. No one complained and the rest is history. Today Kamchatka is famous for it's huge Rainbow Trout. All of the pictures of giant Rainbows were caught on our trip. Ouzel introduced catch and release angling to Kamchatka and the use of Russian helicopters to access it's beautiful rivers for fly fishing.

Kamchatka Fly Fishing Trip

Exploratory trips are run each year. Join us on one if you're this kind of adventurer. The fishing is generally up in question on these trips. That's the way we first found all the great streams we float today. Today we are still finding and fishing new rivers that have never been fished by westerners before.

fishingOur staff of 6 per float trip does the work while you fish and relax. You don't have to set up camp. Ouzel's commitment to quality service remains the same after 30 years, a First Class Operation. Our camps are extremely comfortable from our Northface sleeping tents to our SOTAR rafts (which stands for State of the Art Rafts). We present three hot delicious Russian meals each day. The soups and main courses are hearty and heart healthy. After breakfast you wade off down river. Shortly camp is packed and your raft is back with you. Two guests per raft fish with a seasoned helpful fly fishing guide who rows and works hard to make your trip a wonderful experience. We wade fish all day. Boats float from hole to hole. At days end the rafts go ahead and set up camp. You can either ride along or wade fish into camp. We carry a satellite phone for emergency communications. We've caught them up to 33 1/2 inches!

There are 6 species of Pacific Salmon. Arctic Char are present all summer. Kundzha (east Siberian Char) are great fighters! Salmon arrival times vary from stream to stream but generally arrive the same time in Kamchatka as Alaska. We fish for King Salmon from mid June through early July. Silvers arrive mid August and run through October. Chum run all season long. Sockeye Salmon arrive in July and August. Pinks run early August through September, but only strong on even numbered years.

Kapushka River Fishing

fishingThe Kapushka River is the Kingdom of Giant Rainbow Trout! Over it’s 70 miles course we sometimes only float 13 miles in a week it’s so good. It has the biggest Rainbow Trout we’ve ever seen in Kamchatka. Even better, there are lots of them and it’s the most wading friendly river I’ve ever seen! It’s shallow and wide with a pumice and gravel bottom strewn with few boulders. It flows wide and is knee deep through most of it’s course. Vast rolling mountains and volcanoes flank the shore of this ever clear spring creek. It doesn’t ever muddy. We even get to soak in a healthy hot spring in one camp.

It's the best river in Kamchatka for Big Robust Rainbows which average 24 to 26 inches here. We’ve caught them up to 35 inches in length! Char, Kings, Sockeye, slivers and Chum Salmon all spawn in this magnificent river. If you like big Rainbows, this is your dream river!

Kartushka River Fishing Russia

fishingThe Kartushka River begins deep in tall mountains flowing in a single channel through a tight valley. Not much braiding. Wading is very favorable. It cruises with class 2 to 3 rapids mixed in. We discovered the tiny Kartuska's splendid scenery and precious habitats. The Kartuska is a“gem” of a river, It has lots and lots of thick Bows that Average 21” and go up to 28”. More bows per mile than any other river I’ve seen in Kamchatka. There are not that many Char in this river. If you enjoy clear moving streams teaming with Rainbows & unexpected elegant landscapes this is your river. The upper river looks a little like the Middle-Fork of the Salmon River in Idaho. It’s gorgeous

Zhupanova River Fishing

Kamchatka's Fishing is excellent fishing for huge Rainbow Trout.

Medved River Fishing

fishingThis river is magnificent. The volcano that attends us on our journey is so enormous and impressive its really hard to imagine or describe. The Medved River has many interesting sights along its banks. There are hot springs, gas springs, beautiful views and some short hikes of interest. Rapids are at the top of the river as it flows into a caldera. The fishing inside the caldera is fantastic. There are more rapids as the river flows from the caldera and widens gracefully into a myriad of islands. Wade fishing is very good and the Rainbows are big and fat. The Medved River is an ideal choice.

Oblukovina River Fishing

The upper Oblukovina River is a seldom floated River. Stunning views present themselves as we float the crytal clear waters. Waterfalls are prolific and the river is teeming with fish. Rainbows, Char, Chum Salmon, Sockey and Kings can all be caught on this river. The helicopter flight to arrive at this remote rivers edge is dramatic. This is a honey of a find.
