Matapédia River Atlantic Salmon fishing guides and lodge
Matapédia Atlantic Salmon Fishing Guide
We are happy to offer guided fishing in the only intra-coastal region of the Gaspésie, the Matapedia Valley. Renowned for its salmon fishing, it stands wild and steep in its southern part and stretches toward the north leaving space to the agriculture industry. This is where the Matapedia River has its source, Matapedia Lake.
Atlantic salmon appear in the Matapedia River as soon as the month of Mai. Most of these salmon, generally females of considerable sizes, will directly go into the Causapscal River, one of the major tributaries of the Matapedia. In mid-June, salmon are found in many pools. These salmon are silver bright and quite big; 18 to 30 pounds and more! When the major run arrives in the beginning of July you can expect salmon of 10 to 22 pounds. Later in mid-July, grilse’s of 4 to 8 pounds will appear but it is not surprising to see them at the end of June and beginning of July.
Thereafter at the beginning of September, we can expect a run of large males. Depending of the waters levels, the months of August and September can be quite astonishing when the large males appear in the river. These months are excellent for dry fly fishing. Most of the pools up-stream are full with many salmon of different sizes and a few monsters…just for you!
Matapédia River Trout Fishing
You will also find a great population of anadromous trout (see run trout) and indigenous brook trout (salvelinus fontinalis). You can catch these trout from mid-Mai until the end of November.
These trout weight between 1½ to 3 pounds but don’t be surprise if you catch bigger ones. The Matapedia is not only recognized to be one of the best rivers in the province of Québec, but across the world for its wild Atlantic salmon.
Matapédia River Fishing Guides
Each day that you will be fishing, a professional certified guide will take you on the river and direct you to the best pools of the zone you will be fishing. He will show you the hot spots, help you in your casting and recommend the best flies to use at that time. Fishing hours are at your discretion, but we highly recommend that you take a nap in the afternoon. Let's give the fish and guide a break! All our guides are certified guides, have insurance and a valid first aid - cpr card.
Guiding services are available from June 1st to September 30th.
The Matapedia has a clear tea colored water tint that becomes very dark when it receives a good rain, but the water can be very clear when the level drops for many consecutive days. The Matapedia is a large river that can be fished from a canoe or from the bank, wading. You can fish in most of the pools with a single hand rod but a Spey rod is a major advantage especially in high water and with larger flies. This river is very accessible and all the sectors above Brown’s pool are unlimited public access, until the Les Fourches pool, 20km up-stream. There are also many pools downstream, in Saint-Alexis and in the village of Matapédia that you can fish. There are no winter reservations except for the Glen Emma sector. On the Matapédia, the only draw for public water is for the upper and lower section of poll # 6, Haley’s pool situated in sector #1. This pool fishes well with a two handed rod or by canoe.
We will take care of putting your names in the draws, and we check the fishing updates and reports every day, so we know exactly witch river is hot and in witch zone, so you can get optimum fishing conditions. This is included in our guiding services either for the Matapedia. This river holds a strong population of wild Atlantic salmon, between 3,000 and 5,000 specimen's each year and has one of the best fishing ratios in the province.
