Scot and Steve Zernia caught 8 aku and 4 shibi and a marlin that got away at the boat
It was dark as we took off on this day of 25 kph trades going to a west side buoy. Just before the buoy we took a marlin hit that slamed the rigger and jumped once and came off bummer. At the buoy we baited and got no hits so we jigged and caught some aku and shibi and ran an aku live. On our way in another marlin ate the purple softhead on the corner and screamed out 500 yards of line and then jumped once. Steve had this fish back to the boat in about 20 minutes, he did a great job reeling it in. It was easy at gaff and with a flying gaff and three half hithces on it's bill as I was subduing it she came back to life and with a rapid tail beat reared up and slid out of the half hiches and off the gaff and was gone. The good news is Steve took pictures before it escaped, and that it did not jump into the boat, which is very real danger with marlin. Steve is gong again tomorow so we have a chance to do better. Aloha Capt Rusty
