Yellowfin Tuna Bustin Out All Over, It’s About Time

Here in Puerto Vallarta we´ve been living under the summer sun, team that with the ultra humidity and you´ve got what it’s like in PV as summer ends. It gets like this as we enter the end of the Hurricane Season, almost any chance of evening rains comes to an end. Of course with the lack of rain, seems to come late season tropical storms. We’ve seen a few this year, but way under normal. With this being an El Nino year we all know anything is possible when it comes to weather and fishing in Puerto Vallarta. This week we’ve seen good fishing get even better.

With the warm currents running way out to sea, we´ve seen perfect fishing conditions at El Banco and Corbetena, plenty of bait and no fish to speak of. Now we’re all jaded around here, so when we normally speak of Yellowfin Tuna, we´re talking about a fish in excess of 200 lbs. But the last couple of years we’ve seen diminished abundance of Yellowfin and there are plenty of fingers to be pointed out there. But the fact remains we’re just happy to be here and we have Yellowfin finally coming in to our World famous fishing grounds. El Banco in particular has been active with most people venturing out return with between three and five Yellowfin Tuna in the 60 to 100 lb. range. You’ll find some strikes on Monsters in the 200 lb range, but don’t get your expectations up on this. The Last few days the bite was happening late in the afternoon, but this will move closer to mid day soon. Black Marlin are finally back as well, ranges vary with 350 lbs being about the smallest you’d see. Sailfish are larger and Mahi are great sized around 40 lbs as well if they´re in the area. Mahi are everywhere right now and the fishing gets as hot as the weather here in PV.

Corbeteña for the last weeks has been the most visited fishing grounds for charter companies and private anglers alike. With plenty of Chorras (blanket name for bait fishing like bonito, skip jack tuna, etc.) making bait is not a problem here. The Yellowfin showed up a day or two before they appeared at El Banco. But now the two most popular spots are alive with great action as High Season comes on to Puerto Vallarta. Sailfish are all over the place and of course there is Marlin here as well. Black mostly, but some Blues as well. Most boats this week came back with between three and seven fish of varied species. Mostly Yellowfin Tuna and Sailfish. Like always, anything is possible here with the varied structures, troughs and jetting ¨Rock¨ makes Corbeteña well worth your fuel dollar. If trolling doesn’t work, kites are still working as well and as always. Double trouble rigs are still the secret and working well.

El Morro and the Marietta Islands are still rocking. For a nice 8 hrs day, you can expect multiple hook ups and plenty of fish for your own blue plate special. No shortage of Mahi Mahi, Sailfish, Pompano, Bonito, Jack Crevalls and the list goes on. If you´re looking for action, this is a great option. But remember to bring plenty of baits. I suggest 20 minimum for now. If you head out and don´t have enough bait, you threw the day away if casting or trolling google eyes is what is working. So many times I’ve seen people head out with five baits on a thousand dollar trip. So make sure you have bait. This past week I’ve loaded out boats up on baits, and thank you know who I did. Casting around the rocks or El Morro has produced double digit numbers of Mahi! Don´t forget about the Sailfish, they´ve set up house here for the foreseeable future. They have been very large, sometimes over 100 lbs and over 100 inches with stout bodies.

Just four miles off the point of Punta Mita the Mahi have been running in the 40 lb range. Now don’t ask me why, they just are. Lots of trash in the water, logs, coconuts and crap in general. Casting in this spots can be surprising productive at times, so if you see a clump of sticks and grass etc, pull down and give it a few minutes of casting, may be glad you did.

Inside the bay the action has finally picked up with Dorado in the 20 lb range cropping up at the trash line and around the southern end of the bay around Los Animas. Bonito, Skip Jack Tuna, Needle fish, Snook at the rivers and Jack Crevalls and yes, maybe even a Sailfish or two. Remember, Billfish love Mahi as much as we do! So it makes sense.

So as you can see the fish are back and the clients are beginning to line up to take advantage of these conditions. If you’re in the area, I’d like to extend a special invitation to those who would like to be in my fishing program to contact me and I´ll make you a star. Hit me with an email for details and have a professionally made video to have of your day fishing. Of course I’ll be the host and we’ll also put the same video up online for the world to see. So, interested?

Well, that’s enough for these weeks, until next time, don’t forget to kiss your fish….
