As Summer slides into Fall, Puerto Vallarta Fishing in High Gear
Moving into the lower half of the month the air in the morning has an unusual freshness to it from the off shore breezes here in Marina Vallarta. We’re seeing familiar faces as the seasonal residents begin to return. Especially since the weather in North America has taken a noticeable dip in temperatures. With Colorado reporting the earliest opening days at ski resorts, I guess we could say High Season Has Begun once again in Puerto Vallarta!
The roller coaster week of up and down fishing at the deep water locations continues. Puerto Vallarta Sportfishing deep water locations are driving even seasoned Captains to scratch their heads. With El Nino Currents disrupting the regular currents that would normally flow through El Banco are now farther out to sea so 12 hrs just won´t cut it if you´re shooting for Monster Yellowfin Tuna amigo. There is Monster Yellowfin Tuna, but you have to be willing to go where they are, not where you want them to be. That is how the game is played and it’s not for everyone. To be competitive at this level of World Class Fishing, you have to be prepared for any circumstance or what’s the point of going. This means money flows from your wallet like a river during the rainy season! For those lucky few, there are locations such as the Sand Bank or the Tres Maria Islands (prison islands). For the guy who is serious about his fishing and has the financial resources and fuel capacity, can have any fish he wishes.
For those of you who still are land locked like myself, the ten and twelve hour locations of El Banco and Corbeteña are gonna make you work amigos! El Banco has been offering morning bites on Black Marlin hovering around 500 lbs, Yellowfin Tuna anywhere from 30 to 200 lbs., it just depends how lucky your stars are. Cubera Snappers are circling the high spots and larger Dorado have been moving in and out. Now I won´t say they’re all doing this at the same time, but if you spend enough time out there, you´ll find them. The idea of heading out and dropping a line with instant strikes is not happening like that at the moment. So get that fantasy out of your head, you´ll just be disappointed. But if you put up a good fight, there is plenty of bait, the water temperatures are where you want them to be, the water is blue and we´re in a perfect time for moon phases and tides. Only thing missing in this picture is you.
Corbeteña as always is alive with action. For those giving up on El Banco and trying their luck at The Rock, Sailfish, Marlin, Cubera Snapper, Rainbow Runners, and yes the occasional Yellowfin Tuna. With all the varied bottom conditions and a jutting out rock in the middle of nowhere, you´ve got a hotbed of opportunities here. With plenty of live bait, blue water, calm conditions and perfect temperatures for air and water, it´s hard to figure out why we´re having to work like this, but work we will. Mostly live bait is king with El Banco and Corbeteña. Try lures and some teasers, may get some response, but be ready for a lot of bill whaps and give them time to take the bait. Half hearted whaps are like telling a salesman to give you a card, nothing happens. Patience is a virtue and a skilled first mate is a gift from god…. Corbeteña is a great spot to head out to and take a shot, if nothing happens by mid day, hit closer in locations like……
El Morro and the Marietta Islands this week are your best bets for fishing and catching. With Its location just outside of the bay, with land still in site at Cabo Corrientes, the area has been producing faster than Uncle Sam can print money! With multiple hook-ups a real probability, Sailfish are abundant and hungry. Dorado are nicely sized in the 25 lb range, perfect for the dinner table. Rooster fish are sparse this week, but still there and remember no matter what they say, Rooster fish is good tasting. Don´t let the captains tell you otherwise, they want it for themselves….. With Bonito, Jack Crevalls, and a list of other species to choose from, why go anywhere else? For the price of an 8 hr admission ticket, you and three of your other friends can get out for $375.00 usd…. So what’s stopping you now amigo?
Punta Mita while being a little quiet the last few weeks has woken up and for the few that did head out that way this week, they were rewarded with some great Action. Just off the rocky point Roosters and Dorado have been hanging out. I couldn’t tell you why, but they are. With lots of trash in the water from the recent rains, there could be logs or something stuck in a rock or between rocks creating a small fish heaven. Whatever the deal is, it´s happening. Casting a goggle eye at the base of these rocks will definitely get a reaction. Around the corner Sayulita has been waking up as well once more with lots of Rooster Acton off the shores for the surf fishing guys. Surf fishing in the area is great by the way, sandy bottoms and shallow, you can land some nice Roosters here as well as Pargo, and Snook near the river mouths.
As I mentioned earlier, High Season is here so make sure you visit Marina Vallarta and tell your friends about the Marina and where it is. Many shops in the Marina have been struggling with the low season and it´s time the word got out to how cool the Marina really is. So support your local shop owners and restaurants… Not to forget the Sportfishing guys either!
Puerto Vallarta’s 54th Pez Vela Tournament is coming up November 11, 12, 13 & 14th. The Web site is: http://www.fishvallarta.com/esp/indexesp.html the site is in Spanish, but it´s what there is to look at. If you have any questions you can fire me an email or you can send a mail to the site itself. Master Baiter´s has several boats available for the tournament and we don´t jack up our rates, just extra for fuel. It´s our tournament and we wouldn´t want a simple thing like gauging customers keep anyone out of the tournament. Magnifico a winner four years ago is also available with the same crew. So if this rings a bell contact us and we´ll fix you up. I even have a fishing program online now, so we may offer to make you as star! Something to think about and it´s a great time!
Below are three You Tube links talking about the Dorado being fished out in the Gulf of Mexico and throughout the world. Very interesting stuff that I AM SURE YOU AS FISHERMAN WOULD BE INTERESTED IN KNOWING. First you have to be informed, and then something can happen. Check it out, you´ll be glad you did!
