Summer Time Fishing Finally Returns, Marlin, Dorado, Yellowfin!
Where are we and how did we get here? Interesting question since I already know where I am, I just don´t know how we wound up Entering October before the fishing got to July Conditions. But I am not complaining, in fact I am relieved. El Nino for some reason seems to be backing down and we´ve returned to bait filled Fishing Grounds and perfect water Temperatures of late. For the moment it looks like ideal conditions may continue for some time to come.
At the outer, deep water fishing grounds of Corbeteña, we´re seeing daily action increasing. With seeing a greater numbers of fish and a greater variety of fish here this week. Black and Blue Marlin have been hanging around the Rock lately and that´s not all. Cubera Snapper for those willing to bend their mind set a little are running in the 45 to 65 lb range. Using the old wounded bait method, just toss one over the side, let it sink over the structure and hang on, there will be dinner on the table tonight. Sailfish have been in and out lately. Mostly in and mostly hungry. Yellowfin have been teasers lately. Many around and still in the 60 to 100 lb range. But the bait is plentiful and coming into a full moon Yellowfin Tuna are going to be a little picky here for a while. Not many Dorado this week, but with diminished charter numbers it´s hard to tell what is or isn´t out there sometimes. But we know for a fact that on any given day there are trophy fish available and waiting for you to present them bait that will tickle their fancy.
El Banco and Corbeteña will at times be like night and Day, at other times, be the same. This week things have been much the same at the two locations. More Black Marlin at El Banco has brought those looking for some larger Billfish action to this popular location. With plenty of bait off the high spots anything is possible here! Yellowfin have been more consistent here, but not exactly on tap if you know what I mean. Remembering fish are always bigger at El Banco, if you´re shooting for something that could possibly be a world record, it would probably happen at El Banco before anywhere else. Yellowfin the last couple of weeks have been across the board. Some large, some normal and some invisible. Invisible because you know they´re out there, just now where you can see them! Running down riggers and surface baits are still a good way to go, and kites are working also. So what does this mean? It means you better be equipped when you arrive or not having the correct colored lure, or bait or kite etc. could ruin your day. Fishing is not a cheap sport and if you head out without the right stuff….. Don´t be caught by being cheap, well equipped boats cost more than fuel for a day of fishing. Coming in on a cheap boat still feels like you got screwed, but coming in with fish, the cost is never an issue, remember this when looking for a charter boat up to snuff. Quality comes at a cost, of course.
For those looking to save money, on day fishing, will find El Morro and the Marietta Islands to be rockin! Sailfish have taken over the area and just a few days back we had the Judy Trafis group come back with a nice Sailfish for the photo. She and her group released another Sailfish, boated four Dorado (30 lbs) and other misc. fish. Eight hours and all those fish made this day well worth the price of a fast and equipped boat. As you can see from the picture, this was no slouch of a fish. Some Rooter fish at El Morro rocks and many Needle fish or as I was told, the poor man’s Marlin! This is one of those places when anything is possible. With a little strange luck, Blue Marlin has been known to visit this area on occasion. With plenty of bait fish in the area, it can be enticing!
With what appear to be fading El Nino Symptoms, we´ve seen a little more rain, which means there is a trash line in the bay once more, for now. The smaller game fish love to feed off the seeds, leaves, bugs and organic materials that go with this trash line. So in the bay fishing the last few days has improved greatly with Roosters, Small Dorado and several other hungry species waiting for a three inch diamond jig to wiz past them. It´s kinda like waving a new credit card at my ex-wife. Doesn´t matter what the deal is, she jumps at it and will figure things out later! Same with these fish, when they´re hungry, they´ll take a swipe at anything shinny and quick! Out near Cabo Corrientes or south towards Chimo, Skip Jack Tuna have been bringing in larger game fish. Now Some Sails are roaming the bay, but this is like getting
It looks like the back half of fishing high season will pick up and find more fish in the area for the visiting and local anglers alike. With the blue water and better water temps I expect the fishing to continue to improve. With the great prices being offered to tourist on flights and hotel rooms, we´ve already seen a slight increase in the number of charter boats heading out in the morning. Everyone in Marina Vallarta is optimistic about the upcoming tournaments with the fish returning daily improvements.
Now remember, you can always fire me an email and ask me anything that comes to mind about Mexico or Puerto Vallarta, doesn’t have to be about fishing, Restaurants, banking, medical stuff, even questions about how the water is clean and very drinkable in Puerto Vallarta are more than welcome. It´s about building community and not so much about promoting my business. I am well known, so I am truly interested in your well being and getting the straight truth to you without an agenda. Can’t say that about many in Puerto Vallarta, so don´t be afraid to ask, answers are free…… So are dumb looks… HAHAHAAAA
Below are three You Tube links talking about the Dorado being fished out in the Gulf of Mexico and throughout the world. Very interesting stuff that I AM SURE YOU AS FISHERMAN WOULD BE INTERESTED IN KNOWING. First you have to be informed, and then something can happen. Check it out, you´ll be glad you did!
