TARPON
March to August: The tarpons begin migrating North in March. The migration goes on thru to August. They slow down in September and October and start migration back south around the first week in November. They naturally migrate thru the Victoria Channel and Tarpon Caye is located in the center of the Victoria Channel; this is a major stopping point for them migrating north and migrating back south; due to the fact that they feed on the minnows that live in the lagoon; the minnows feed on the marine algae that line the bottom of the lagoon; therefore they are here almost all year round.
January and February: these two months are when we get more severe cold fronts that affect the temperature of the water and the fish they continue migrating south, we do still have resident tarpon around for these months.
PERMIT
March to August: these are the best months to fishing for Permit in Southern Belize. The reason for this is that our tides are more or less stable during these months; also in these months the best time to fish is on the last quarter or first quarter moons; these moon phases give you two rising tide in a day. It also increases the options of catching a permit.
September to November: we experience much higher tides; therefore first quarter and last quarter moons are still the most favourable period; but your fishing tactics changes from fishing on a half full to full tide to a low to half full tides to compensate for the extra high tide we get in these months.
December to February: You want to fish basically the new moon or full moon; due to the fact that these three months are noted for extra low tides; and you will want to fish the Spring tides so you could get the highest tides in those months.
BONEFISH
March to August: these are the best months to target bonefish in southern Belize. In southern Belize there are approximately 15 + area that you can fish for bonefish.
September to February: it’s difficult to see them on the flats due to the extra high tide that we get, but you can fish them in deeper area.
