South Fork Regional Fishing Report
Updated: 07/10/09

The Fishing has been great!! We are seeing the best dry fly fishing of the season so far. The bugs are here and the fish are looking up. We have seen Salmon Flies and Golden Stones from Byington up to the dam. The May fly hatches have also been phenomenal! Pmds green drakes and mahoganies are hatching in big numbers.

The May Fly hatches are occurring from noon throughout the day. As it warms up we should see hatches occurring earlier in the day. The river will also continue to drop so we should start seeing some riffles appearing soon. The fish are on the banks and eating aggressively. In the morning start fishing with golden stones or Salmon flies tight on the bank. We have also done very well with super Xs on the bank. The key is to cast tight in on the bank.

As the day warms look in riffle water and watch for the hatches. You will see yellow sallies and Pmds. Try casting a #14 or #16 yellow or brown Stimi. Have a good selection of P.M.Ds both in pink and yellow is also a good idea. Having Duns and Emergers is a good idea. Look for fish to be hanging in the shallow water right before a drop. I would have Pmd patterns in #16 and #18s. If your planning a trip in the canyon don’t forget to have a good selection of green drakes as well.

We haven’t been doing much with nymphs because the dry fly fishing has been great. Having some rubber legs and a selection of small nymphs is a good idea. The fishing is great and should continue throughout the rest of the summer and into the fall. Please give us a call at the shop with any questions you may have or book a trip and let us do the rowing. Good Luck and be safe.
