Wyoming Fishing Report - May 20, 2009
We have finally hit the 70 degrees mark a few days this past week in the Upper Green Valley. The high country is just now starting to melt and the spring run off is coming.
New Fork; The New Fork has cleared up and is fishing good now. Water level is real nice right now for fishing/floating. Pine creek is coming in at a nice flow and clear as is Pole creek. Boulder creek is finally running nice. It has a bit of color but not bad. Plan your trip for the New Fork this week.
Upper Green; The Green from the confluence of the New Fork upstream is beginning to mud up. Flow rate is increasing - but not considered high yet. Visibility is at about 3 ½ feet right now and that will be going down hill over this next week. Fishing is still pretty good for Browns and Rainbows using streamers, double bunnies and the occasional mouse pattern. A black bugger with black rubber legs and some flash, using a small zebra dropper worked the best. Red johns and RS2 droppers also did well.
Green above Fontenelle: We had a great day in the LaBarge area hooking and landing several fish in the 16 to 21 inch range. Rainbow, Brown and Cutthroat all took streamers and buggers - some on the dropper. Best technique was to caste up and across, lots of weight to get it to the bottom, and let it bounce off the rocks on the swing downstream. At the bottom of the downstream swing, strip a few times before recasting, but most were taken during the swing.
Below Fontenelle - Tail Water; I don’t know what to say about this. The spill way was under repair and the flow was shut down to as little as I’ve ever seen. Three of us fished all morning and did not even get a bump. When this repair is over it should produce well. The Seedskadee area had good reports but we did not fish it ourselves.
Ham’s Fork; The Ham’s Fork is completely blown out. The river is way up and way outside it’s banks. After the three of us fished it for a day and a half we only landed about 5 fish.
Green River - Dutch John; We arrived (May 12th) to hear that they opened the dam from 850/900 flow to 1200 the day we drove down. We were discouraged to find out that the day we wanted to fish they were kicking it up 4500. Talking with the local guides they told us they had no notice at all. The story is “they” are trying to save a grass grub that hasn’t been considered since they put in the dam. Talk was that the flow would continue for about a week. Needless to say folks were not very happy. I did not verify the story, but know they’ve done the same on the Snake the last few years below Palisades trying to kill off the Rainbow spawn so the Cutts will have less competition. Isn’t it sweet how the do gooders never offer information and/or ask for input.
HR 980; We had a scare in the upper Green River Valley that this HR 980 bill would be passed. Rep Maloney (Democrat from New York) proposed a bill to close all of our forest access roads, drastically increase the Wilderness Areas, close our firewood harvest areas (which are full of beetle kill) , close our ski area, close the 2 small marinas in the area, close roads to trailheads, close our Elk feedgrounds… They tried to keep this bill under the radar and legislatures were told they needed to vote on this right away and there was no need to read the bill as it was good for the environment, for the community, and it would increase jobs. Pinedale (population 1400) had a town meeting which had to be held in the High School auditorium. The auditorium which is a very large facility was shoulder to shoulder people. It was pointed out by our legislature that no one from Wyoming was consulted on this bill. When Rep Maloney’s rep was questioned if Maloney had ever even been to Wyoming the response was, “Well I think she was out west somewhere once, but I don’t remember which state it was.” Got to luv these folks.
Secret Area; Well, after we got all worked up standing by the dam trying to figure out just how the “Powers to be” could be destroying the local businesses who need the fishermen, and wondering how they can be sending all that water downstream while the west is still in the draught cycle, I was given a secret spot to go fish. Oh my goodness was it good. I think I caught a few 16 inch or less, but most were larger. I caught fish like you wouldn’t believe. I promised not to disclose this spot, but I’ve been known to give up a few secrets if the right people pump me for information during a fishing trip. In about three weeks the lower areas of the mountains will be opening. The fishing in the Winds is absolutely spectacular. Can’t wait.
