May 9, 2009 Opening day on Rainy Lake

I left the dock with two of our guides Jon Balaski and Joey Dougherty at 5:00 AM (not the normal time) and traveled to the Kettle River. Pre sunup temps were about 40 degrees. The walleyes were biting pretty good considering water temps were 42 degrees. We fished jigs and minnows from 6 – 40 feet. Some walleyes hit very hard others very lightly. Size was good from 1 ½ to 5 pounds. We landed about 35 walleyes fishing until noon. The warmest part of the day was the ride up, air temps dropped below 32 degrees with light snow flurries.

Things look good for spring fishing; ice out was April 30th. The earlier the ice out the better the fish bite.

Look for more reports the beginning of next week.
