This past week has seen a high temp only into the 50’s. Nights are down to freezing. The spring runoff has slowed. Most of the Ranch meadows have melted a few weeks ago which means our rivers are now clearer and fishable.
Green River; The Green has real good visibility above Daniel. Flow is good and Browns and Rainbows are available. The lower section, Big Piney to Fontenelle has been fishing real good for Big Browns. These guys seem to have a hunger right now. Try some big fly patterns like Mouse or Double Bunnies and be ready.
New Fork; The New Fork River was blown out 10 days ago and now has about a 3 ½ foot visibility at Boulder which makes it real fishable. The New Fork is running real clear through Pinedale. Pine Creek is coming in clear, Pole Creek is up and coming in a bit muddy but not too bad. This attributes to the color of the New Fork there down. Boulder Creek has not really picked up much in the past 10 days.
The Big Browns on the lower section will run into the 20 inch range.
I landed 9 browns in about 3 hours on the upper section – but nothing over 12 inch. They took Wooly buggers, Red Johns (20), RS2 , WD 50(20), and I even tried a San Juan Worm (#8 red). Nothing seemed to be the ticket but the action was fun.
I slipped on those slippery rocks on a missed hook up and ended the effort with two wet arms and a race downstream chasing a full fly box.
I think the next two weeks will produce some great fishing. Everything seems to be getting right for that early season prior to mud up. I’ll keep my fly box pockets secured. I don’t run down stream as good as I used to.
