Upper Green River Valley Report

Well, at least the coffee tastes pretty good today. I’m looking out my
window into what we call a marshmallow day. The ground is covered with 6
inches of new snow and the fog is so thick you can’t see 100 feet. It’s like
living in a marshmallow.

This past week it was much nicer and the rivers started to open up. The
Green River is now open all the way from Fontenelle reservoir north to the
Forest Service boundary. Water is running clear enough for fishing in the
areas Huston north. Field run off has not muddied up the waters too bad yet.
Mountain runoff is very minimal so far. It has been mostly below
freezing at elevations 8,000 foot and above. The Rainbows are moving pretty good
right now. I’ve got a special fly I use this time of year that produced
real well last week. (see below)

My ranch sits at 8,000 feet in the Upper Green valley. I am in the
process of plowing the snow from the road and there is a lot more snow than what
we thought. I’ve hit drifts 7 feet deep and have plowed snow on the level
stretches which was 4 feet deep.

The New Fork River blew out last week. It is running high and muddy. The
60 degree weather which hit Pinedale a week ago melted a lot of the ranch
meadows in the lower elevations and they took their toll on the New Fork.

Boulder Lake was still 95% frozen last week and Boulder creek below gave
up some nice Brookies. I hooked 6 in 2 hours ranging 8 to 13 inches. The
fishing here is still finding pockets of deep water in the rocky river bed
where these fish survived the winter. The flow is still minimal here and
the larger fish have not yet arrived. There are several spots where the
above ground flow is almost non-existent.

The Bloody Bugger is an early season favorite of mine. I have designed
this fly and tie a mess of them every spring. It does rather well. I take
the hook with a bead head and I wrap the whole length with lead. (This
helps get it down with the higher early spring flow) The tail is 90 - 95%
black marabou, the rest red marabou and then about 6 to 8 strands of
flash-a-bou. The body is Peacock herl wrapped with Grizzly Hackle.
