Hello Everyone and welcome to 2009.

Conditions for the start of the year has been average to say the least, with heavy monsoonal rain causing significant flooding issues to the Nadi area. In a four day period, we received over 1m of rainfall, which in the area surrounding Nadi caused a fair bit of damage to low lying areas.

Resorts on Denarau Island however were well protected and although a little damp, everyone was OK.

Whilst the rainfall kept our boats ashore for the best part of a week, it has allowed significant debris to be taken out to sea, and that is generating significant flotsam and structure which has attracted the Mahi Mahi in scores. We have had great success on this wonderful fish and will continue to for weeks to come.

Water temperature is still high, and generating specific bite times for the Yellowfin Tuna. We get pretty good runs at this time of year and recent catches of 30kg plus are common. Great for the Flying Fish restaurant at the Sheraton Hotel, who make some of the finest seafood dishes anywhere in the South Pacific.

Also being helped by the heavy rains are the great fighting Mangrove Jack in and around Port Denarau Marina. This is a fantastic predator, that has been using the dirty water to it's benefit, and our selection of poppers and lures have been securing some great examples of this prized fighter. You dont need to travel to the 1000m depth line to get a great fighting fish - they are here at our own marina!!
