Hi fellow fisherpeople,
well the season has drawn to a close with all the rivers and streams in the Gore area getting awell deserved fresh from an early autumn snow fall. It was such a quick turn around of temperatures from a 19 degree average to a 3 degree cold snap, but the hatches in the afternoons just got better during April with big mayfly hatches coming off about 2 oclock and lasting a couple of hours, alot of fun with the silly 2 pounds browns leaping and tail walking across the river , still using fine 4 lb tippet as the suns quite low and leaves a big shadow on the surface film, they certainly fought better than their size. Most of the big brown have cruised up stream to spawn paired up and very aggressive, when you hooked one the other would chase the caught brown even right up to the beach before shying away.
Walked up two Fiordland national park rivers at th top of lake Te Anau, 2 weeks before the end of April and it's good to see that the sandflies showed no mercy to us locals as well but they couldn't damping the fishing, with big trout travelling up out of the lake to spawn all in good nick , my friend Simon caught 5 rainbows all about 6lb average also was snapped of by 4 really big browns that would not come back using 7lb tippet no way could he turn their heads alot of fun but tough walking thru bush and deep water crossing without felt sole boots as they are banned from the National parks, as they don't want Didymo, in their pure environment.Hopefully Didymo will get washed away over the winter and the spring thaw is quick to keep the rivers fresh so the bugs get washed down and all the feeding trout .
Snow has falling again last week right at the end of the season so all the rivers are full and coloured, just what the duck shooters ordered to fill their ponds, till the start of the new 08 season in October tight lines and for all of you guys fishing in the northern hempisphere don't let the truth get in the way of a good fishing story
Cheers Bunny
