Still More Hatches on Our Provo River

August 1, 2007

As if the abundance of insect life on the river wasn't enough in the last few weeks, we have now gotten into a thick Trico hatch every morning. These swarming insects are hatching in a manner that can only be described as suffocating. Early in the morning you can see millions of tiny mosquito like flies migrating up stream. Soon after the swarm starts, fish will start to rise aggressively. Spinner imitations in sizes 22 and 24 will take some fish.Dropping emergers with delicate tippets will produce very suttle takes. The Trico hatch is lasting until around 10:30 when it gets too hot. At this point it is important to be ready with your PMDs and Caddis. Nymphs and emergers are working very well until 2:30 when the PMD hatch really gets going. At this point alot of noses start picking off bugs as they emerge. The fish are very picky about which PMD immitations they eat so be ready with several styles and sizes. The abundance of caddis pupae in the river is a great source of food for the fish. Size 16 olive caddis emergers are taking lots of fish even when the other hatches are at their strongest. The other bug that we sometimes forget about is the Sowbug. The rocks are absolutely covered with them and the fishes bellies are plugged full of size 18 Sows. The numbers of fishermen has thinned out a little and with the exception of the well known spots accessing good holes and runs is pretty easy. Remember to be kind to your fellow fishermen and give people their space. There are plenty of fish to go around so spread out and learn some new techniques. Good Fishing Everyone!

The Lower Provo is continuing to run high and fast with the construction to the dam. Fishing is still very good with small Sows and San Juan Worms. The PMDs and Caddis are present but not like on the Middle. It is a fun atmosphere with all of the tubers floating by and they really don't upset the fishing very much. There have been some issues lately about private land access. These issues are being worked out and everything will be back to normal soon enough. Be respectful of the land owners and let the "Powers that Be" work out the problems.

Middle Provo: (238cfs) PMDs and Caddis are the main food source right now. Some Stoneflies will also produce early in the morning. The fast water is the key right now for numbers of fish.

Lower Provo: (487 cfs) Pale Morning Duns are the major hatch on the Lower right now. Sowbugs and San Juans are still effective during the high water. The caddis are coming off in droves and the fish are feasting on these either on top or with nymphs.
