Fly In Fishing Wawa

The fishing season at Pine Portage Lodge opens the third Saturday in May each year. For 2009, the opening date is May 16th.

Post-spawn pike and walleyes are primarily in shallow water, back bays, rivers/creeks where there is some current. Live bait rigs are best at this time and must be fished slowly. As the water warms, trolling a minnow imitating crankbait (e.g. Rapala) is also a good way to cover water and locate active fish.

July & August

Walleyes are found on rocky shoals, sandbars, points, and around islands in 8 to 20 feet of water. Developing weedbeds will always attract and hold walleyes and pike. Drifting over submerged weeds or trolling the weedlines are good approaches. At Kaby Lake, back bays lined with bullrushes can provide some exciting shallow water fly fishing when the mayfly hatch is on. At these times, topwater tactics and flycasting approaches will produce some exciting fishing for whitefish, walleyes.

Late July - September

The time for Kaby Lake's big pike! Casting approaches (spinnerbaits, streamers, bucktails, spoons, jerkbaits) will consistently attract Kaby Lake pike. Walleyes are usually found in deeper water near weedlines, island saddles, shoals, and current breaks. Fishing a jig tipped with a minnow or piece of worm is a simple yet effective approach for catching late-season Kaby Lake's walleyes'.

Kaby Lake provides great fishing throughout the season, although fish do re-locate as summer progresses. Our staff and guides will be pleased to suggest hotspots to try your luck. Comfortable and reliable boats, experienced guides, and delicious shore lunches will make your trip to Kaby Lake both successful and memorable.

Kaby Lake Cabins

�General information - All our cottages are constructed of up-right log. We offer a variety of sizes of cottages to suite the various party accommodation needs. The cottages are comfortably furnished with queen and single beds; all bedding and towels are provided, and changed as needed. We also supply soap, toilet paper, Kleenex. All cottages have electric lights 24 hours a day, electric refrigeration, propane stove and 4 piece baths. American plan accommodations have daily housekeeping services and towel change.

Kaby Lake Fishing

Kabinakagami Lake, commonly known as "Kaby Lake", is a large fly in lake located approximately 70 miles north of Wawa, Ontario. The Lake is 25 miles in length and 13 miles wide, covering 30,802 acres. Kabinakagami Lake (Indian translation of "lake of many bays")is the largest in the Algoma District and is the headwaters of the Albany River system. Kaby Lake, although not a deep lake, boasts clear water, 147 islands, innumerable weedbeds, shoals & dropoffs, and provides great fishing for northern pike & walleyes throughout the season, as well as whitefish and perch.

Rugged and remote, Big Kaby Lake offers not only great fishing, but excellent opportunities for observing wildlife , outdoor photography, and a number of prepared shore lunch sites, beaches for swimming, a river system for canoeing. In the fall, we offer fantastic hunting for bear and moose (both bow and gun) as well as birds - partridge and ducks.

With many interesting natural landforms, river canoe routes, and historic links to the fur trade, logging & mining interests, the Kabinakagami Lake area has many interesting sites to explore. Due to the large, irregular shape of Kaby Lake with its many bays and miles of sheltered shoreline, the weather seldom keeps anglers off this beautiful Northern Ontario lake. There is always somewhere out of the weather to fish, and enjoy your shore lunch of freshly caught fish - the highlight of any fishing trip.
