The Margaree River is one of the best-known Atlantic Salmon Fly Fishing rivers !

The Atlantic salmon is the most acrobatic of all game fish with long, powerful runs, which can quickly empty a reel. It is this reeling experience that you can look forward to at our lodge. We invite you to experience the majestic beauty of the waters and natural lures of the land.

The Margaree River

Cape Breton Island is an extraordinarily beautiful place, and the Margaree River is one of its most scenic spots. In the lower stretches the Margaree River valley is wide and the river meanders slowly through meadows framed by the distant mountains, which comprise the Highlands. As you move up river the valley becomes narrower and the river tumbles between bans which are those same mountains, then the valley widens again in Big Intervale. The lodge is located in what James T.Gray in his Handbook to the Margaree called "the wildest part of the river". This is apt since it is common to see hawks, eagles, beavers, moose, etc.

Cape Breton FishingCape Breton Fishing Season

On the Margaree River the season extends from June 1st to October 31. Salmon may be angled for only by means of fly-fishing. Weighted flies are forbidden. Only fish of 63 centimeters (24.8 inches) or less in fork length may be retained. Larger fish must be released alive.

Brook Trout and Brown Trout are available in the Margaree River as well as in neighboring bodies of water. Season for trout is from April 15 to September 30.

Licenses:

7-days general Fishing License $ 31.74
Season General Fishing License $ 57.45
1-day License $ 12.46

Salmon License $ 57.45
Salmon License season $ 140.99

Flies have to be barbless (June 1 to October 31)

The "typical" salmon outfit on the Margaree is based on a one-hand rod of8 to 10 ft. class 7 to 9, or a two hand rod of 13 to 14 ft, class 9 to 11. Lines should be consistent to the class of the rod. Types of lines vary from floating, sink, sink-tip or intermediate, depending on the water level. A high quality reel with a smooth drag will save many fish, as will the capacity to hold ample backing (100 yards or more).Nova Scotia Salmon Fishing

If you come between June and September you should have a good selection of dry flies. Your fly box should also contain a good selection of standard and low water wet flies, some light and some dark in a good assortment of colors. We use flies such as Green Highlander, General Practitioner, Cosseboom, Black Bear, Muddler, Blue Charm, Big Intervale Blue, Bugs, Bomber, Wulffs and Marabou flies . And if you come in the fall, don't forget to bring some Micky fins.

You will find a bright selection of locally tied flies, leaders, etc at our tackle shop as well as Licenses and we rent waders, rod and reels.

Fishing Guides are not mandatory in Nova Scotia, but our experienced local fishing guides will improve your chances of catching fish and will save you much time in learning the River.

We certainly can not promises you fish, but we can promise that we will do all we can to put you in the right place at the right time with the right fly.

We cam to this river to catch an Atlantic salmon. We found friendship, nice atmosphere, and beautiful nature. We caught Salmons too, so we are looking forward to come again to swing our flies and feel a strong fish on the Line again.
