Salmon fly fishing in breathtaking Norway on the famous Gaula River
Lax- move straight forward for Norway 2009 - a great destination that gives you high value for the money in the "mother country" of salmon fishing. All real serious salmon fishermen should fish Norway at least once in a good season! Now Lax- proudly presents one of the best arrangements ever in Gaula!
The river Gaula has been among the top three rivers in Norway for decades in the catching statistics, and on the very top in more recent years NASF took a blessed action to manage a buy out of the gill nets in the Trondheim fjord some years ago, which secured the runs and breeding of the famous Norwegian salmon in the Tr ndelag rivers for years to come. This gave a very obvious and promising effect in 2008; it has been estimated that the rise of big salmon (weighing more than 7 kgs) increased by 50% last season. Just to give an example; the top 5 fish in 2008 from the beats in the Lax- program for Gaula was 18,5 kg, 17,5 kg, 16,6 kg, 16,3 kg and 15,3 kg!
Gaula River Fishing
Gaula flows through the Gauldal valley in Sor-Trondelag county, Norway. It drains a watershed of 3,658 km. In the south it starts from the lake Gaulhoen in Holtolen municipality, where it is joined by a tributary, the Sokna river in Storen village, in the county of Sor-Trondelag, Norway. The river runs into Gaulos fjord at Leinstrand, Trondheim in Sor-Trondelag county. The river Gaula is approximately 145 km long.
The river Gaula is statistically one of the absolute top salmon rivers in Europe, famous not only for the numbers of salmon it produces but also for the high average size (6-8 kgs = 14 to 18 pounds).
Including the tributaries the salmon can be found in 210 Kilometers (131miles) of the river. This together with the fact that fishermen from all over the world have made pilgrimage to the Gaula for more than a century, has given this river a very special status amongst the most serious of salmon fishermen.
Every year Gaula is at the top of the catch statistics from Norway's salmon rivers, with 30-50 tons of rod caught salmon. For a long time Gaula River has been in the absolute top of among Norway's 629 salmon rivers, second only to the Tana River which is 10 times longer, but still produces only twice as many rod-caught salmon.
Salmon runs on the Gaula during the early season consist of large fish averaging approximately 10 kgs (22 lbs). The prime fishing takes place in June and July for fish in the 7 to 15 kg range (15 to 35 lbs), with some stunning 40-pounders on occasion. Grilse runs arrive in mid-July, followed by a good run of sea-trout. But the runs of fish of all sizes are actually quite spread out during the season 1st June - 31st August: Depending on water levels and temperatures, one can experience late smaller runs of fish in sizes 7-15 kgs even in late July/beginning of August.

The beats in the program:
Rogstadmoen Beat
This is our "home-beat" in this program, only some 15-20 meters from our base camp, the Lax-a Lodge. The beat of Rogstadmoen can present a vast number of interesting pits and holding spots for really big salmon. This is one of the beats in the lower parts of Upper Gaula where fresh runs of salmon usually stop and hold for a while - or to spawn - once passed the rapids of Gaulfossen at Storen. The beat is 2,2 kms long, holds many interesting pools and shows on average a nice glide and an even speed of water. Easy to fish on most water conditions and is absolutely ideal for those who want to practice on their two-hand casting technique. The beat of Rogstadmoen fish very well on all water levels, even during real droughts with low water, common from end July. At such conditions, this long beat can offer gin clear waters and sight-fishing for big salmon!
Tranmael Beat
The Tranml beat is approximately 1 km long on both sides of the river. The beat offers an exciting salmon fishing with very good variety in beautiful surroundings. The chances of big catches are fair throughout the season, with the best weeks in July and August.
The beat is characterized by a glide that flows into a long pool followed by a very interesting part with lots of rocks and stones; great holding spots for the salmon. This part comes to a clear"edge" with rapids followed by yet another glide.
The Tranm l-beat is situated approximately 10 km upstream the mouth of the river, which means that almost all salmon running up the Gaula during the season, will pass through or stop and hold along this particular beat. For sure, this beat presents fair chances to catch really big fish during the June runs, but thanks to the long gravel- and sand bank along the entire beat, this is also a place for the salmon to stop and spawn through the entire fishing season. Great opportunities to catch middle-sized salmon and grilse from beginning of July and on.
Tranml can be fished on all water levels - from 300 m3 /sec (high water flow, measured in Gaulfossen) to extremely low late summer levels. The Tranml beat changes its characteristics to a great deal at different water levels, which presents the curious and skilled fisherman with constantly new challenges.
The beat is long and allows fishing on both sides - you'll have no problems whatsoever being 8 fishermen or more at the same time on this beat.
Evjen Beat
Evjen is truly a majestic beat, offering some of the best fishing hat you can find in Gaula for really BIG salmon, especially early in the season. The beat is close to the village of Lundamo, some 25 kilometers upstream from the river Gaula's inlet and a couple of kilometers downstream the rapids of Gaulfossen. Here, the river flows strong through this fruitful agricultural district that dominates this part of the valley. On its way down to the ocean, the powerful water shapes slightly new gravel banks and bottom pits every year, especially interesting for us salmon fishers.
Our beat is consists of approximately a 1300 meters long fishable length and hold a variation of small rapids, fast flowing water and good holding spots for the salmon. The beat starts at the top with some shallower gravel banks that speed up the water before "the grand finale"; a very visible, strong rapid over rocks and gravel.
After that rapid the beat changes its character quite dramatically and becomes deeper and calmer, yet very strong. This lower part of Evjen, that always holds BIG salmon in the deep, is a hard challenge for any experienced salmon fisher. But the chance of catching is always very near!
Down by the river bank you have the typical Norwegian wooden "gapahauk" wind shelter. This gapahauk is actually placed in one of the most interesting spots i the Gaula valley; there's no better place to sit and scout for rising/running salmon at dawn or dusk. Or, in fact, in the middle of the day in bright sunlight! When you see the first fish show in the shallower rapids right outside the shelter, then you know it's time to grab the tackle and go for it!
Evjen has many great spots to fish from on its entire length, all with different characteristics, challenges and benefits. The beat is long and gives plenty of room for 6 fishermen.
