Gaula River, Trondheim, Norway, fishing guides, fly fishing, salmon,
Norway Fly Fishing Guide After many years of searching for the best flyfishing water throughout Norway, I decided to settle down on the best flyriver in the Trondheim area. Fishing the Gaula right from my first arrival in Norway 38 years ago, I have been able to compare it over a long period of time with the other Norwegian rivers. I found the Gaula river to be more reliable than all others.
I myself am a dedicated fly fisherman and have fished all of the well known rivers in Norway, including the Alta, Vosso, Tana, Namsen, and the Laerdal, on which I leased a nice beat for a number of years. Due to close friendships with the owners, I have also fished the famous rivers Aaro in Norway and Em in Sweden on a regular basis for many years. In addition, I was able to fish in Russia, Canada, Island, England, Scotland, Denmark, Argentina and North America. Since 1977, I have contributed articles in several international magazines regarding protection of salmon, technique and tactics for salmon and sea-trout fishing and have since been active in the conservation of wild salmon and its many types fighting net-fishing and the destruction of its habitats.
It is my aim to offer you unparalleled salmon fishing at the finest and most exclusive beats to create an unforgettable experience in Norway's mesmerising nature.
Norway "Land of the Midnight Sun"
Norway is famous for its breathtaking fjord and mountain scenery and for being the home of the Vikings. More importantly, as far as the salmon angler is concerned, Norway is a fabled land of pure, clear, rushing rivers which flow through heroic scenery and are the haunt of giant, hard fighting, silver salmon. Norway remains the one country where there is still a chance of hooking the wild salmon of a lifetime; and for the sheer exhilaration of playing heavy fish in a strong-flowing river, Norway has no peer.
THE NORWEGIAN FLYFISHERS CLUB (NFC is run as a private company and a private club by it's Chairman Manfred Raguse, with the aim to preserve wild salmon stocks and to provide private fly fishing water, "know how" and good service. The NFC has, over the years, carefully selected prime fly water in the most attractive reaches on the Gaula River. The NFC employs a regular team of very competent professional guides who are all accomplished fly fishermen, speak English and are always ready to help. The NFC is very proud of its Gaula operation which is the only Scandanavian fishing destination that is recommended by ORVIS.
Summer Harvest Norway Salmon Fishing
Fishing for salmon in Norway takes place from June 1st to August 31st. The best salmon fishing is to be had during the nicest weather periods of the year. The first part of June is the time for sunk-line fishing. Starting at the end of June, intermediate and floating lines with smaller flies are the norm. Suitable tackle is available for hire or purchase and local fly selections may be purchased as well.
The Gaula River
Runs through unspoilt surroundings starting from the mountains near the Swedish border, enters the sea at Trondheim Fjord and has always been one of the finest and most productive salmon rivers in the world. On average over the last 20 years, the annual rod catch of between 15-49 tons on the Gaula River has been, among Norway's 629 salmon rivers, second only to the Tana River which is 10 times longer, and produces just twice as many rod-caught salmon.
Salmon Runs
On the Gaula during the early season consist of large fish averaging approximately 22 lbs. The prime fishing takes place in July and August for fish in the 12 to 22 lb. range, with some stunning 30-pounders but the whole season there is always the chance to catch a 40-pounder! Grilse runs arrive in mid-July, followed by a good run of sea-trout and fresh run fish of all sizes run until the end of August.
Gaula River Fishing
The following is a brief outline of our fisheries on the Gaula River:
The Rotation fishery is our main fishery is the group of rotating beats between Kvl, Storen and Rognes. It is an exclusive fishery where pairs of fishers move through a large number of excellent and varied pools in rotation. In this way you ensure maximum chances during your stay. This is the best option for the first-time visitor.
The Bogen Sondre Beat is a very attractive and comfortable private beat for a group of four to six rods. It is a combination of exclusive water with country house accommodation right on the river bank.
The "Upper Gaula Beat" is a bit higher up in the river and also very exiting fly-water, but at a lower price. Here it is a clear advantage to have some more salmon fishing experience and to be able to Spey cast or do the Underhand cast. The beat is including a country house which is located nearby the beat. This beat takes bookings for single rods or by a group.
Accommodations
Accommodations comes in various packages. One may choose between the comforts of the hotel close to the Gaula which provides delicious food and good service, or opt to stay in one of the NFC's lodges which have the advantage of being located right on the bank of the river.
