Audra, and I, had the boat built for ourselves, and it has been a labor of love the past year. We have been very involved in every stage of construction from lay-out to finish.
The boat has a pair of large Caterpillar motors to get you there, and back, quickly. She has a large generator running 2 A.C./HEAT units to keep you comfortable whether its 95 degrees, or 25 degrees. She also has all the amenities of home. She has plenty of seating, and plenty of bunk space. She has a large, modern, head, with hot running water, and a shower. The overhang is very large to keep you protected from the elements. The fish box, and ice box, are extra large to keep even the biggest fish well-iced.
I could go on, and on, but in short- the boat is as comfortable, and as functional, as you will ever fish on! "Shack" Meet the Captain Your captain, Britt Shackelford, was born and raised in Gloucester, Virginia, which is located on the Chesapeake Bay. His family has lived in the area for over 300 years and generations have been involved in the fishing industry. Fishing has been a part of Britt's life for as long as he can remember. Summer jobs always included the water.
Prior to getting his own captain's license and buying the Doghouse, Capt. Britt worked as a mate for some of the best captains in the world. During his tenure as a mate, Britt fished a number of tournaments, finishing 3rd and 4th in the Pirate's Cove annual billfish tournament and 5th in the Mid Atlantic 500 in Cape May, NJ. In 1999, Britt was voted Mate of the Year by his peers.
Britt brings a wealth of knowledge to you on the "Doghouse" garnered from years as a mate & subsequently as a Captain.
One of the biggest lessons learned as I look forward to my 16th year offshore , is that people dont want to be treated like children. Being able to handle the rods and get in the middle of the action is something most people enjoy. We dont care if it is your first time or your 50th time; there is more to fishing than having someone hand you a pole to crank in and then take it back from you. My mate and I will go to great lengths to explain how we do things , and then the ball is yours to run with. Remember: eight people working together are better than two.
Our interactive approach carries over to the tackle. Our tackle is the best money can buy. However if you want to fish with your own; whether fly rod, spinner or stand up, by all means help yourself. We will not, however fish with tackle in poor mechanical condition or reels with old line. If you have not fished with me before; I want to get to know you. The bridge is not off limits, so come on up. Don't miss the action in the cockpit, but take the time to come and introduce yourself. There is a completely different vantage point from the bridge. Make sure to give me your camera, or take some pictures from up top yourself. The Mate Capt. Britt goes to great lengths to make sure you have a hard working, patient & courteous mate.
Capt. Britt and his mate dont care if it is your first time or your 50th time fishing - there is more to fishing than having someone hand you a pole to crank in and then take it back from you. They will go to great lengths to explain how they do things, and then the ball is yours to run with. They'll do all they can to carry you to the fish so that you can reel 'em in.
The Doghouse welcomes seasoned veterans and first-timers alike, and has hosted groups of men, women, families with kids, people with disabilities, honeymooners, bird watchers - you name it!
" Our mate works for tips. 15-20 percent is a standard gratuity, and is greatly appreciated"
