 Nags Head Charter Fishing
The OBSESSION is home-based at Pirates Cove Marina, which is in the Manteo/Nags Head area of North Carolina's beautiful Outer Banks. From April thru early December, Captain Jeff runs full day charters, heading offshore through Oregon Inlet to take advantage of the accessibility of over 100 miles of 100 fathom curve...the outer continental shelf-edge, with its sharp drop-offs, canyons, rock ledges, Gulf Stream and Gulf Stream eddies. The unique combination of hydrographic and geographic conditions existing off the Outer Banks results in some of the world's most productive waters and is the reason why the Outer Banks offers some of, if not the, finest year-round abundance of big game species along the continental United States.
About the Obsession...
The OBSESSION is a 55 foot custom 'Carolina' sportfishing boat, the last and largest in a long line of vessels built specifically for charterboat fishing by Capt. Sheldon Midgette. The OBSESSION carries state of the art electronics including radar, color fish finder, and GPS chart plotters. Its large salon features: heat/air, microwave, stereo, VCR and a refrigerator. Fishing Calendar January thru mid March - Isla Mujeres, Mexico for the light tackle sailfishing season
Experience the excitement of light tackle sailfishing in the turquoise blue waters off Isla Mujeres, Mexico. The OBSESSION will be available for charters between January 25 and March 20. This time period has provided consistently incredible action in recent years. This is the peak period for winter sailfishing off Cancun where 5-10 sailfish a day is expected and 20-40 fish/days not uncommon. Some winters, from mid-December thru February, Captain Jeff runs charters for giant bluefin tuna, out of Oden's Dock, Hatteras, NC or the Morehead City Yacht Basin, Morehead City, NC.
Outer Banks Charter Fishing April and May
The OBSESSION returns to Pirates Cove, Manteo, NC. Excellent yellowfin tuna fishing is available during these months along the western edge of the Gulf Stream. The seasons first catches of dolphin, marlin and wahoo occur in April, and become more prevelant thru May. The years best big "gaffer" dolphin fishing begins in mid-May. King mackerel are available throughout these months.
June and July Great multispecies fishing! This is the beginning of the peak billfish season. Blue marlin fishing is excellent and white marlin and sailfish fishing steadily improves. Yellowfin tuna fishing is excellent though mid-July. Light tackle dolphin fishing can be outstanding, with large fish in peak abundance through June and school dolphin plentiful throughout the two months. The first bigeye tuna of the year are caught in early June and bigeye tuna fishing (100-300lb fish) can be red hot over a few canyons from mid June thru late-July.
August and September The U.S east coast's finest billfishing occurs in our northeast fishing grounds from late July thru mid-September. Multiple catches of white marlin are common with double digit catches a good possibility! We use light tackle...25 lb line on stand up rods...for white marlin and sailfish, to increase hook up rates and to maximize the angler's enjoyment. Peak availability of blue marlin and sailfish offer the your best chance for a "grand slam" along the mainland U.S. coast. August and September is also the peak period for giant blue marlin (700-1000 lbs), and Oregon Inlet has accounted for 4 'granders' boated and several others battled but lost. Dolphin of all sizes are still abundant and schools of yellowfin tuna become increasingly prevelant in September. Wahoo fishing can be excellent.
October thru early December Hardy souls enjoy outstanding tuna fishing, with 'limits' of yellowfin tuna common. October thru mid December fishing offers outstanding, often incredible action for yellowfin tuna. By the first of second week in October, schools of yellowfin return to waters off Oregon Inlet and hang out for a few months. These fall fish are often big (40-80 lbs) and hungry. Some years, they settle into the area, and we catch them chunking with butterfish on standup tackle. Other years, the seem to move around more, and we get them trolling. In either case bring plenty of coolers.
