Mataura River New Zealand Trout FishingMataura Fly Fishing Guide

Hi I'm Julian Peters and welcome to my backyard...

Let me guide you as you experience New Zealand's premiere Brown Trout Water of the internationally renowned Mataura River Valley and beyond. I will, as your guide endeavour to bring you the best possible experience from your New Zealand fishing adventure.

I have been fishing Southland's rivers since boyhood and through fly fishing over the last fifteen years I have met people from all over the world, made friends and helped them discover a little bit of paradise. Come fishing with me and I'll show you my piece of paradise...

Mataura River Dry Fly Fishing

New Zealand Trout FishingSouthlands rivers and streams are a Mecca to dry fly fishers throughout the world but the pearl among them is undoubtedly the Mataura river with its reputation as one of the best brown trout rivers in the world. It is famous for its hatches and spinner falls and is the best 'match the hatch' fishing in New Zealand.

Here at Mataura Valley Trout Safaris we specialise in 'sight fishing' and Southland's clear clean rivers and streams are well suited to this method of fishing.

From meandering lowlands to bustling headwaters the Mataura river valley has something for everyone.

Spot and stalk wily browns or 'match the hatch' and fish, the rise. The Mataura river provides challenges at each new turn.

Mataura Fly Fishing Tackle

I have a range of fishing tackle for clients to use

New Zealand Fly FishingRods -- of 8-9 ft and W#5-6 cover most needs
Lines -- of DT or WF in greys, dull greens are best as bright coloured lines will spook the fish
Flies -- standard international patterns like pheasant tail, gold ribbed hares ear, hare and copper flashback and bead-head varieties of these sizes: 14#-20# work well here. Dry flies Adams, Blue Dun, Dads Favourite and variations tied no-hackle, parachute, paradun or CDC style again in sizes 14#-20# work well.

Things you will need to bring

Wading: light Gore-Tex type waders are excellent or shorts and thermal leggings/longjohns.
Clothing: A warm windproof and waterproof rain jacket is essential. Dull or earthen coloured fast drying clothes and warm micro-fleece/polypropylene style underclothes are recommended (temperature can range from 5 degrees to 30 degrees C throughout the season.)
Footwear: good quality, stout tramping boots, wading boots (felt soled.)
Good quality Polaroid glasses with yellow or amber lenses and a hat are a must, wide brimmed or legionnaire style is best. A high SPF sun block is recommended, as the New Zealand sun can be very harsh.
