Duluth fishing Charter

After many decades in business, the prime objective of Cat's Paw Charters is to share our great enthusiasm for Lake Superior, its spectacular scenery and outstanding fishery.

We aim to offer not only a safe trip but the finest hospitality and lasting memories. The end result of a fishing trip must be a good time. Our operation has evolved over the years as the fishery has changed and our equipment has been modernized.

Today we are proud to introduce the 41 ft. Hatteras as the flagship of our fleet.

Widely considered as the world's most renowned sport fish yacht, The Hatteras enables us to offer the experience of big time game fishing in the nation's heartland on the pristine waters of Lake Superior.

While we may not have sailfish or marlin, the trout, salmon, and steelhead offer a most exciting fishery.

"Hatteras Charter Fishing on Lake Superior!"

Lake Superior Fishing Boat

The 41 ft. Hatteras was designed as a spacious sportfish yacht with all the comforts of home that would raise the biggest marlins from the depths of the worlds oceans. This particular model is considered to be naval architect John Hargrave's finest work. The 14 ft. beam allows ample elbow room for 6 fishermen to operate in the stern fishing area.

The boat is powered by twin General Motors 8V53 diesels with a Westerbeke diesel generator providing 110v current while underway.

The previous owner spared no expense and had the finest marine electronics available installed by factory technicians.

Although the Hatteras' reputation is largely based on their safety record, we upgrade safety equipment on a yearly basis to comply with U.S.C.G. regulations.

In its inaugural year of operation on Lake Superior, the boat successfully adapted to Great Lakes type fishing.

THE OPERATOR

Gerry Downes has the longest duration of charter fishing service on Western Lake Superior. Sponsored by the legendary Stanley Sivertson, he was licensed to operate by the U.S. Coast Guard many years before the State of Minnesota began their guide license process.

Lake Superior Fishing

Lake Trout are the most abundant catch on Lake Superior. Their numbers have rebounded very well in recent years. They are most active from May, as the surface temperature rises, until their spawning run in October. Although it is not impossible to land a 30 lb fish, a typical lake trout is 3lb to 5lb.

Chinook Salmon have a well deserved reputation as a powerful fighting game fish and add great excitment to any trip. A good salmon may range from 5lb to 12lb. In the fall of 2005 we did land a chinook of 23lb which showed we still have some big salmon.

Walleyes surely send the pulse of any Minnesota fisherman racing. There is a window of opportunity in the springtime to find extraordinary walleye fishing on the sheltered waters of the St Louis Bay system. The open waters of Lake Superior will produce some fine walleyes during the warmer months of summer.

The summer months from May through October have been the prime times for Lake Superior fishing. However, the introduction of the Kamloops Rainbow Trout fishery has now produced the most exciting action very early in the spring and late in the fall. Kamloop trips along the North Shore of Lake Superior in November (in a 70 degree Fahrenheit heated salon) have been the highlight of our year.
