The Mille Lacs Lake area is cool in summer! Hot in winter! But to really appreciate our area, stay awhile, because most of our secrets are shared only with those who take the time to get to know us. Visit us during any season and discover our good nature from a fairway, a snowmobile trail, a bike path, a lawn chair on a sandy beach or the porch of a cozy resort cabin.

There's much more than walleye fishing...

You'll find events, excitement and recreation no matter what time of year. Visitors to the Mille Lacs Lake area are presented with a fascinating array of recreational opportunities.

Often called the "Walleye Capital," Mille Lacs Lake produces a harvest of 200,000 to 400,000 walleyes each year. But, there's more than Walleye beneath its surface. All told, this renowned lake is home to 40 species of fish include Smallmouth Bass, Northern Pike, Perch and Muskie.

Mille Lacs Launch Fishing - Launch fishing is Mille Lacs Lake's equivalent to charter fishing on the ocean. Mille Lacs is one of the few Minnesota lakes big enough to accommodate launches. These group fishing boats range in size from 25 to 73 feet and hold from six to 50 people. Many resorts around the lake carry on the 70-year old tradition, offering morning, afternoon and evening departures with half-day, full-day and night options. Single group charters are available as well as walk-on launch trips for singles, couples, families and other groups. There is no need to bring your own equipment as most launches furnish bait, tackle and advice. Fun is standard on every trip.

Mille Lacs Guide Fishing - Local fishing guides are often second or third generation Mille Lacs Lake dwellers with the accumulated knowledge of more than a single lifetime. They know their way around Mille Lacs Lake's unique structure and can pinpoint reefs and drop-offs where fish customarily gather.

Mille Lacs Boat Rental - Rent a boat for a half or full day and experience the lake on your own.

The fish house count has exceeded 5,500 in recent winters. Plowed lake roads provide access to the fish houses, which can be rented in half-day increments. Furnishings vary from the bare minimum to a home away from home, with gas heaters, cook stoves, tables, chairs, bunks, carpeting, paneling, curtains, lighting, separate bathrooms and/or nearby satellite toilet facilities.

You can do it yourself or take advantage of the ice fishing packages around the lake, offering anything you want from overnight lodging, and transportation to and from the ice house, to bait, tackle and meals. See how to rent a fish house or hire an ice fishing guide.

Mille Lacs Lake business owners and residents devote almost constant scrutiny and analysis to ice conditions on the lake. In excessively cold Novembers the lake has frozen over by Thanksgiving, but normally the first ice fishing activity starts around the first week of December near shore and in sheltered bays. By mid-December the lake is usually frozen over. It freezes all the way across by late winter, with ice sometimes 3 feet thick. March usually signals the demise of Frostbite Flats.
