Trout & About is located on the Gunpowder River in Maryland. We cater to all levels of fly fishing experience and we welcome newcomers to the sport, especially women and children. Our goal is to provide personalized high quality service in everything we do.
Gunpowder River Fly Fishing Trout & About's guiding focuses on the catch and release streams of Maryland, within three hours of Washington, DC. Our favorite is fly fishing Gunpowder River. We also guide on select put and take waters like the Middle Patuxent. Full day fly fishing trips are eight hours on the water and include transportation from a mutually agreeable location, on-stream instruction, lunch, and flies. Half-day fly fishing trips are four hours on the water and do not include lunch. We prefer to work one-on-one with clients to maximize instructional value, but we will work with up to three on request. Instruction is always tailored to the personal needs of our clients and can include any or all of the following: casting, reading water, presentation and drag control, entomology, knots, wading techniques, and fishing etiquette. A full set of equipment can be provided for a nominal fee. Fish stories are always free!

Trout & About's instruction includes one, two, and personal on-stream schools, fully instructional river days, individual casting lessons, and fly tying lessons. Our guiding focuses on the catch and release streams within three hours of Washington, DC. Most notable of these is the Gunpowder River, but there are many others. One Day - Intended for beginning fly fishers. $150 per person. A deposit of $75.00 per person is required. Two Day - Intended for beginning fly fishers. Includes the one day school plus a second day conducted on the stream wit emphasis on fishing techniques. Cost is $275.00 per person. A deposit of $100.00 per person is required.
Personal on-stream school - Intended for beginning fly fishers. Cost is $300.00 for one and $400.00 for two. A deposit of $100.00 is required. Fly Casting Instruction We conduct individually tailored lessons for beginners or those looking to improve specific areas of their casting. Usually conducted one-on-one, or in small groups. Phil Gay, who is a Federation of Fly Fishers certified Master Casting Instructor, heads our instructional team.
Fly casting courses are broken down into sessions that won't exceed two hours. Both courses include instructional booklets and use of equipment. Fly Tying Course for Beginners Beginning fly tying covers equipment, tools, materials and techniques. Usually conducted over 5 two-hour sessions. Nine common fly patterns are introduced and tied. Fly tying classes are limited to three people to maximize instructional value. The course includes an introductory session and four tying sessions.
