Middle Fork Salmon River Fly Fishing

fishing"What can I say? You have made me twice the fisherman I was. The fishing on the Middle Fork can't be beat!"
The Middle Fork of the Salmon River is one of the premier fly fishing rivers in the Continental U.S. for native cutthroat and rainbow trout. The water is crystal clear and a classic dry fishery. Consequently, we encourage most of our guests come to fly fish. Even the novice angler stands an excellent chance of landing significant numbers of fish each day. The Middle Fork Salmon River is an excellent place to introduce the young or novice angler to the sport of fly fishing. Our Middle Fork Salmon River fly fishing guides are all avid fishers and take pleasure in teaching the beginner all facets of fly fishing.

Middle Fork Salmon River Fishing

fishingThe Middle Fork of the Salmon is one of America's premier fishing rivers for native cutthroat and rainbow trout. The water is crystal clear, the fish aggressive and their size, outstanding.

We encourage guests to fly-fish as The Middle Fork is a classic dry-fly fishery. Even the novice angler stands an excellent chance of landing a slew of fish each day. There is no better river on which to learn the sport, especially for youngsters. All our guides are avid fishers and take great pleasure in teaching every facet of fly fishing.

Fishing is best from early July through September. Fish range in size from 10 to 21 inches with the average being 12 to 15 inches. Experienced anglers able to place flies gently next to cliffs, rocks and other holding water have caught fish in the 16- to 18-inch range and an occasional 20- to 21-inch Dolly Varden. It also is not uncommon for the skilled angler to land more than 50 trout in a day.

fishingFor those who want the ultimate Middle Fork fishing trip, you can also charter a private fishing boat. A chartered boat lets two anglers and one guide set their own pace, explore side streams and have an excellent fishing adventure. Private chartered boats are available on ANY of our summer launch dates for $700 per person with a two-person minimum. We offer fall specialty trips, too. September fishing is excellent and our first trip is reserved exclusively for fly fishing. We offer cast and blast trips in later September. Call for details.  Guests are welcome to fish from our oar boats throughout the day and from shore during lunch or while at camp. The number of guests who want to fish determines how much fishing time is available in each oar boat each day

As for fishing gear, waders are not necessary (with the exception of our fall trips). We do keep a net handy. We also offer a fly-rod rental package through a trusted local shop, Idaho Angler. The package includes a fly rod and case, 10 flies, floatant and extra leader for $95. Reserve a rod by contacting us ahead of time, and we'll have it ready for you. Otherwise, Idaho Angler is conveniently located in Boise for rod pick-ups and other fly-fishing supplies.
