Fly Fishing Roatan at Mango Creek Lodge:

The Salt Water Fly Fishing Treasure of the Western Caribbean

Fishing Roatan Honduras:

At Mango Creek Lodge, we offer world class fly fishing in a secluded and gorgeous environment. We are the premier Roatan fishing lodge just off the coast of Honduras in the Bay Islkands. Our expansive property sits in the heart of historic Port Royal- an isolated harbor that was once a notorious hangout for pirates such as Henry Morgan. Here, you'll find the perfect balance of spectacular fishing and comfortable accommodations.

Recently voted one of theĀ  Top 10 Locations for Permit by Fly Fishing In Salt Water Magazine, Mango Creek enjoys a reputation as a challenging and exciting place to fish that is far from the ordinary. All three species of fish primarily target by salt water fly fisherman (bonefish, permit and tarpon) are found in substantial numbers in our waters. Whether wading the shallow coral and turtle grass flats in search of tailing bones or permit, or spotting baby tarpon as they roll in Roatan's labyrinth of mangrove canals, you're sure to have plenty of opportunities at a memorable hook-up. Plus, you may never have the chance to fish in such a pristine environment.

In most cases, bonefishing at Mango Creek is done by wading our expansive flats with your experienced and knowledgeable guide. For many, stalking bonefish on foot is the ultimate in excitement as you are forced to play the role of the sly hunter. The number of fish you are likely to see is impressive- be them tailing as singles or in pairs, or cruising in schools of literally hundreds. As most of these flats are quite shallow with grassy or rocky bottoms, light flies and, in some instances, weed guards, are highly recommended. In the end, a stealthy approach and an accurate presentation are quite often rewarded with a hefty fight from the resident bonefish.

All of our Roatan fishing guides have been born and raised on the local waters. Their knowledge of local weather, tides and fish behavior is unsurpassed, and their intrinsic charm makes spending a few days on the water a pleasure in and of itself. At the same time, they work long, hard days to ensure that our guests get every opportunity they could want during their stay. We do not believe in an 8am to 4pm day of fishing. Every one of our Roatan fly fishing guides has a passion for fly fishing and they will go from sun up to sun down if you've got the stamina. Because of the nature of our fishery, we limit the number of fisherman on the flats to six on any given day. This is to ensure both the quality of fishing for our guests as well as the well-being of the environment.

Aside from fishing the more proximate flats of Roatan, Mango Creek is also able to offer the exclusive opportunity to fish the even more remote flats surrounding the island of Guanaja. This is a once in a lifetime chance to cast to large bonefish that may never have seen an artificial fly before. In addition, you'll be chasing the fabled permit of Guanaja that once garnered world wide fame for their size and numbers. Details of this trip must be worked out upon arrival at the lodge, as the trip is very much weather dependent.

Roatan Fly Fishing Lodge 5 Star Accommodations -

The Lodge at Mango Creek consists of four over-the-water cabanas, a restaurant that is right on the shore, and a luxurious main lodge that sits up a small hill. The grounds themselves are a veritable Eden; immaculately kept flower and vegetable gardens lay hidden among the giant mango trees that cover the entire property.

Most guests stay in one of the four cabanas. There, they can enjoy their down time lying in a hammock on their own private porch, watching the waves break over the nearby coral reef. The cabanas are all well-ventilated and are accentuated with hand-carved doors and wooden floors made of gorgeous Honduran wood. Swim or snorkel right off the front of your cabana, and when coming in from a long day of fishing, feel free to ask your guide to drop you off on your porch while he cleans your gear and unpacks the boat.

Meals are served in our restaurant, and drinks and appetizers can be found inside at the bar as well. Normally, fisherman will head out early and fish until breakfast. After coming in to eat, they head out again with a packed lunch and a cooler full of drinks so they can fish until evening. Dinners are informal and the menu varies between exotic seafood dishes to local favorites. We try to plan a menu that fits our guests taste and will oblige any requests as best we can.

In the main lodge, there are two additional guest rooms as well as a large living room with satellite television. Also, the lodge boasts an expansive porch with an unsurpassed view of the reef and the mountains of mainland Honduras.

Enjoy the Rest of Roatan with Non-fishing Activities:

The attitude and design of Mango Creek Lodge makes it the ideal setting for the angler looking to bring along non-fishing companions. There are a number of interesting things to do and see while staying here in addition to fishing.

For guests who are looking to get out and actively enjoy our surroundings, we offer an eco-tourism package that includes guided kayak tours of the mangrove canals, guided snorkeling of the vibrant reefs, hiking in the national reserve that borders the back of the lodge property, guided trips to visit the caves and rustic island village of Helene, sailing inside the protected harbor of Port Royal and much more. Guests can also take a walk around the grounds of the lodge with a member of our staff to learn things such as how to harvest a coconut or how to select local plants that are said to cure what ails you. This entire package is designed to give guests a unique perspective of the best of Roatan- the people and places that make it special.

To many people, Roatan is best known for its world-famous scuba diving. Dive trips can be easily arranged for Mango Creek guests at the dive shop just down the shore from our lodge. Also, tours of Roatan by taxi are available upon request if you'd like to get out and see the rest of the island.

For those who are just looking for some serious R & R, we are more than happy to have you down to relax in your hammock, read a book, take a swim and enjoy the solitude of Mango Creek Lodge.

Details- What, Where & How:

Getting to Roatan couldn't be easier. Both Continental and United Airlines offer non-stop service direct to Roatan from the United States. There are a number of smaller foreign carriers that have scheduled flights to the island as well. Upon arrival, guests will be met at the airport by an identified driver who will bring you to the small village of Oak Ridge. There is no road access to Mango Creek. Thus, we will have a boat waiting in Oak Ridge that will bring you the rest of the way to the lodge. The boat ride is only 15 minutes- just far enough to get you away from the signs of civilization and into our private paradise.

Our Roatan fly fishing lodge is an eco-friendly, self-sufficient establishment. The majority of our power is produced through wind generators and solar panels, though we have a diesel generator that serves as a back up source of electricity. You'll be amazed how we are able to conserve energy without giving up many luxuries of modern life. Additionally, all of our running water is completely safe to drink. We have gone to great lengths to insure that we leave very little impact on the surrounding environment while providing a hospitable home away from home for our guests.

Anglers are expected to bring all of their gear including rods, reels, flies, leaders and anything else they might need. Be sure to keep an eye on our latest fishing reports for suggestions on the latest and greatest flies and techniques. And of course, feel free to contact us with any questions you might have concerning the fishing or the lodge.
