Oahu Fly Fishing Guide

Monster Bonefish

Hawaiian bonefish are monsters compared to other fisheries for the same species. Just like Hawaii is famous for its GRANDER marlin, these behemoth bonefish come in world record sizes.

Knowing when and where to hunt these beautiful fish is 90% of the battle. We specialize in putting our clients in the zone for that shot at the bonefish of a lifetime. Our guides can help you get your casts straight and long, but once you hook that big boy, your on your own to get dragged across the flat like a rag doll. Hold your tip up high and prey it stops before all your gelspum backing is gone. 150yd runs are commonplace with the average bonefish coming in at 8lbs and slobs of over 15lbs are possible if you have the stamina to survive an epic battle.

Oahu Fly Fishing Meeting people and helping them achieve a dream is what makes my job so rewarding. That high five after landing a fish and the smiles I get are priceless. There are slow times on the bonefish flats between tides so bring a good story and a good cigar to round off a day to remember.

An Average day we will see anywhere from 40-100 fish with up to 30 good shots at hooking a trophy bonefish. Accurate casting is more important than the long range bomb casts, so practice a bit before you come across the ocean to try your luck. This will make your experience more enjoyable and successful. 7# - 10# set ups are perfect with the 7# loaded with a floating line for the "tailing fish", and the 9/10# with a floating line for those windy moments. We typically use a tapered 50#-20# leader-9ft with a 10-20# tippet-3ft to help make a smooth rollover presentation.

I would love to put you on some of my off the beaten path spots with my flats boat, so give me a call and lets make some fishing memories and more good stories. Don't worry if your not practiced up on your casting, I am always glad to teach technique for our conditions to make it an enjoyable experience.

Peacock Bass

Peacock Bass or Tucanare are the main predatory species in the lake systems we fish in Hawaii. There are many other species of fresh water fish inhabiting this area such as large mouth bass, catfish, red devils, giant Oscars, and many others that have no names I call nuclear fallout fish. All are great fun if you match the size of the fish with the tackle size.

I love to fish the Tucs with a #4 fly rod and a sinking tippet, or a floating line and a popper depending on the time of day and the aggressiveness of the bite. Clousers minnows, poppers, wiggly leg flies and almost anything in between can draw a bite from one of the many predators lurking in the lake.

Offshore Hawaiian Gamefish

"The best boats, the best crew the best time in Hawaii"

Capt. Mike Hennessy featured in Marlin Magazine, Saltwater Sporstman, and the Outdoor Channel. Fly fishing and light tackle expert. 100 ton masters captains license, IGFA certified captain

I run the ONLY Catch/Release Billfish policy on the island of Oahu. I specialize in light tackle angling with top of the line equipment from 16-80# test outfits. I also offer the only experienced fly fishing crew for offshore species on Oahu. With hundreds of billfish released on fly you can be guaranteed to have a professional team and timing at the ready when that marlin or spearfish shows up on the teaser. My specialty trips are the most expensive on the island of Oahu for these reasons listed above. Our target is to offer the angler an experience of hooking, landing, and releasing of your billfish. Of course if you catch a tuna or mahi mahi we will be glad to send you home with a fillet for dinner.

Besides being a tournament winning boat and crew and catching fish being the high priority, having an overall great time is what we are all about. From live baiting tunas for giant marlin to throwing surface poppers for 100# yellowfin tunas and mahi mahi we have the experience to make it happen. We do it all to make every trip a special experience. Making dreams come true and memories you will never forget.

Captain Mike Hennessy

Captain Mike is now based in Hawaii where he guides fly fishing for trophy bonefish with the outfitter Bonefishing and his own company Hawaii On The Fly. The custom flats boat they use is the key to their success by providing access to remote flats and reefs. Hennessy is also working with the O'io Tagging Program to gather vital information of the life cycles and movements of the resident Bonefish populations and help with sustainable management of the islands marine resources. In addition, he still stalks the blue marlin and yellowfin tuna, hoping to catch that double grander. "I love to put my clients onto the best spot at the prime time to make the experience successful and the memories beyond expectation," Mike exclaims.

He is forever grateful to his dad, Jim Hennessy, for that first striped marlin and teaching him the fishing and sportsman lifestyle. Capt. Mike Hennessy lives in Lanikai, Hawaii with his family. He has a 100 Ton USCG Captain's License and is an IGFA Certified Captain. He has been featured on the Outdoor Channel and many publications including, Center Console, Saltwater, and Marlin.
