Flats and back-country fishing seasons

The month of March kicks off true Florida Keys near-shore sport and game fish season. Tarpon, Permit, and Bonefish flood the in-shore waters surrounding the Lower Keys as the water warms with the season. While there are many other species around during this time, it is these three that boast the most recognition. Certainly recognized for their pure strength and unique behavior, these game fish are somewhat put on hold during the cold water spells that start with the month of November. Yet, it is during the cooler months (Dec thru Feb) that a totally different fishery is made. Redfish, Sea trout, Pompano, Cobia, Snapper, Grouper, Jacks, Sharks, and large Barracuda all storm the near-shore water in search of food and warmth. Literately hundreds of fish can be caught during these months.

Flats and back-country fly fishing

As most fly fisherman know, fine tuning your hunt and achieving the catch and release of a desired species on fly provides an experience indescribable. The lower Florida Keys offers a wide variety of options when it comes to saltwater fly-fishing. The flats and backcountry of the Lower Keys have so many different fish, with so many different flies to throw at them, in so many different ways. And while many other methods exist, sight casting to fish on clear, shallow water flats remains, as the most desired of methods in Keys fly-fishing today. This is because our consistently clear and temperate waters provide for a seemingly endless amount of shallow water habitat for a wide array of species, all capable of pulling far into your backing. And with the large amount of mangrove islands and channels found in our fishing grounds, finding a windless flat or basin is always possible even during a heavy breeze, making it a perfect saltwater fly destination. Capt Luke is a member of the Federation of Fly Fishers Guide Association, carries Temple Fork Outfitter's fly rods and reels with Scientific Angler products, and provides his own unique hand tied flies developed with a life long passion of Keys fishing.

Flats and back-country light tackle fishing

When it comes to Keys near-shore sport fishing, no better advantage exists other than fishing with live bait. And for those who appreciate the hook-up on artificial baits as well, light tackle fishing in the Lower Keys can provide a non-stop thrill ride for those who seek quantity in their fishing experience. Every sought after sport and game fish in the Lower Keys has a favorite food source for every season, matching these favorites with the real thing during particular times of the year can literately provide for an explosive experience. For those who just love to fish must at one point see what Lower Keys light tackle fishing is all about. Capt Luke provides spin rods and reels of all sizes on his boat, and upon request can provide conventional rods and reels as well.
