Homosassa Fly Fishing Guide

Homosassa is an angler's paradise!  Many different types of saltwater fish can be found year-round. There is a healthy fishery of both spotted seatrout and redfish. These two species are what most folks fish frequently for in Homosassa.

Pelagic species such as Spanish mackerel and bluefish sweeten the pot during the Spring and Fall migrations. Rock piles full of gag grouper, grunts, and sea bass dot the gulf's bottom, providing fun for all ages (and meat to take home). I like to match the rod to the fish, using light spinning tackle or bait-casting gear for the most fun.

Homosassa Tarpon Fishing Guide

There are two types of specialty fishing I like to concentrate on during the early Spring and Summer months. They are the challenge of the hard-pulling redfish and the acrobatically jumping silver king tarpon. It's a welcome challenge to catch both redfish and trout on the fly rod, or for catching mass numbers of "catch & release" fish, conventional or spinning tackle is provided.

Tarpon is king during the months of May and June as fly anglers from all over the world come with hopes of being crowned the new world record holder if they can beat 202 pounds, which was caught off of Homosassa in 2001. For the ultimate challenge, I do prefer using fly tackle exclusively during tarpon season.

Fly Fishing Apalachee Bay and St George Sound

"These fish are traveling along the coast and are fresh fish each day, so they are hungry when they see a properly presented fly. There is very little fishing pressure and most days the waters here are gin clear. Areas fished include select spots in Apalachee Bay and St. George Sound. This fishery is not designed with the beginner in mind although the captain will work with anyone. You just need to be able to deliver the fly in front of the fish quickly as the fish are travelling 2-3 mph. Most fish run 60-80 pounds with an occasional one over 100 pounds."

Florida Panhandle Fly Fishing Guide Capt Mike Locklear

Captain Mike Locklear is licensed by the U.S. Coast Guard and has been since 1976. His passion for fly-fishing tarpon began in Homosassa in the early 80's and in operation to this day during the months of late April, May and June. July through Labor Day Weekend he moves his operation north and spends his time guiding anglers to mutiple poon hook-ups.

"I just dearly love it up here, it is cool for Florida weather conditions and the area is so pristine.", says Locklear.

He guides out of a 18' Hells Bay Marquesas or a 24' tower boat depending on the anglers' wishes. "Some of my clients like a bigger boat to fish from as it can get a little rough here at times. The bigger skiff is a more stable platform and we are anchored from the stern most times. For or two anglers, I prefer the Hells Bay skiff. I can handle up to six people in my 24' skiff. Of course only one can fish at a time."
