CUBA 'S HIDDEN FLY FISHING SECRETS
 Las Salinas, located in the Zapata National Park, has been closed for decades as a government military protected area. This new fishing location has just been opened, and Tropical Fly Fishing has been lucky to obtain the right contacts to book fly fishermen to this new flat fishing paradise.
Las Salinas is a beautiful and totally un-spoilt and un-fished area. Las Salinas is a unique national park and it is recently open for fly fishing only. Las Salinas is a saltwater eco-system of many lagoons connected by very small channels. You don't see many differences between high, low and rising tide during daytime. It is a perfect ideal spot to fly fish all day.  It is impossible and forbidden to use motorized boats at Las Salinas. All the lagoons have an average of one ft depth. Las Salinas is protected by the government and allows no more than 6 fly fishermen per day. The guides of Las Salinas are using flat-bottomed non motorized boats with an absolutely maximum capacity of 1 guide and 1 fisherman. At Las Salinas you can fly fish at BIG Bonefish, BIG Permit, Barracuda and the brutal Jack Crevalle. We have caught all species on the fly during our pilot- trip in May 2004. It's impossible to fish Las Salinas on your own or without a license.
Another option is fly fishing on  Rio Hatiguanico for Tarpon (between 10 - 50 pounds), Snook (5 - 10 pounds), Snapper, Barracuda and Jacks. The biggest Tarpon caught in 2003 weighted 60 pounds.......... Guides take you out on the Rio Hatiguanico, that has been described as Cuba's Amazon. The boats that are used at this destination have outboard engines with a maximum capacity of 1 guide and 1 fisherman.
Note: a combination of both destinations can be included in the package of one week fishing! Just choose what you want! Tropical Fly Fishing will advise you in this.
Accommodation for both destinations is at Rancho Don Pedro.
Rancho Don Pedro is located at the right of the Highway A1 at sign142, coming out from Havana. The total transfer time from Havana to Rancho Don Pedro is about 90 minutes. Rancho Don Pedro is built in a rustic style with individual wooden cabins including a terrace, bathroom h/c water, twin beds and it has a very good Cuban restaurant. Rancho Don Pedro consists of several cabanas, used for accommodation, reception and a restaurant. At Rancho Don Pedro you feel the atmosphere of a ranch, nearby and on the premises of it, live animals like horses, cows and chickens. The complete interior of the cabana is made of wood, except for the bathroom. The interior has everything what you need. The personnel of the Don Pedro are doing the best to make you stay comfortable as much as possible. Meals at Rancho Don Pedro are excellent. Every day there is a choice of four different main courses like chicken, pork, beef and seafood. Breakfast is served every morning with a ham-omelet, fruit, eggs, juice, milk, coffee, cheese and bread. The guides of Las Salinas and Rio Hatiguanico
All the guides live in this area. Some of them are working at the biologic center in Las Salinas. All guides are employee of the Nacional Parque Cienaga de la Zapata. The guides work very hard every day to pole you over the flats and know Las Salinas and Rio Hatiquanico at the back of their hands. They have good eyes and are able to see fish at quite a distance
