Anglers flock to Costa Rica for one reason: to catch fish. This is what Billfish Safaris does, period! Whether you are looking to introduce your kids to saltwater sportfishing or chasing your next world record we can accommodate all of your needs.
We fish the waters of the Gulf of Papagayo in NW Costa Rica. This area of Costa Rica is loaded with fish and it is just a matter of what species you wish to pursue on your fishing adventure. We offer half and full day charters as well as night fishing trips. Our half day trips will target a variety of inshore species which include the coveted roosterfish, brutish cubera snapper, amberjack and even tasty mahi-mahi. These trips will employ a combination of trolling lures for mahi-mahi and live baiting to produce monster roosterfish and if you are lucky enough to pull them away from the rocks, giant snapper.
Our full day trips allow for greater flexibility and range of species. Anglers can choose to target billfish (sails; blue, black and striped marlin) offshore utilizing the locally popular bait and switch technique. This is arguably one of the most entertaining ways to fish for billfish as you can literally watch marlin and sailfish inhale baits a short distance off the back of the boat. These trips also offer excellent shots at large mahi-mahi as well as yellowfin tuna. Depending on the time of year (May-Sept.), our full day charters also have the option to chase monster inshore species. Due to the greater time available on these charters, our full day inshore trips will head north of Santa Rosa National Park to structure rich waters that literally produce world record class roosterfish (we have caught 3 IGFA world record roosters), amberjack and snappers within a couple hundred yards of shore. In addition, the proximity of deep water to this structure provides excellent shots at pelagic species as well allowing anglers almost equal shots at monster roosters and sailfish within a spitting distance of the coast. We use a variety of live baiting techniques on these trips which can produce fast action and you never really know what kind of fish you will bring to the boat on these inshore trips.
Our fleet can accommodate any comfort level with vessels ranging from 31-47 feet by known builders such as Gamefisher, Cabo and Riviera. We run no locally-made boats, only trusted manufacturers. We pride ourselves on maintaining these vessels to the highest standards with all vessels possessing U.S. Coast Guard-approved safety equipment and fully-licensed captains and mates. Each boat possesses tournament-grade tackle (Penn, Shimano and Fin Nor) ranging from 20-80 lb. tackle. We can also accommodate fly fishermen with multiple experienced fly fishing captains available however; we ask that fly fishermen provide their own equipment.
