Costa Rica Fly Fishing

Los Suenos, Quepos, Flamingo, Tamarindo, Golfito, Carribean

My name is Dan Ross, and I am the proud owner of Dan Ross Sportfishing. I live full time in Jaco, Costa Rica with my beautiful wife Emma and my son Danielito. Whether it is lounging on the beach, fishing offshore, or enjoying the magnificent rain forest, we fully enjoy everything this beautiful country has to offer. The people of Costa Rica make it even easier with their laid back lifestyle and friendly attitude.

After targeting big fish for the last fifty years in my home state of Oregon, and also Alaska, and South America I call Costa Rica home because the fishing here surpasses them all. Chasing fish such as marlin, sailfish, tarpon, tuna, and dorado is my passion. I would welcome the opportunity to share that passion and experience with you on your next fishing adventure here in Costa Rica.

Costa Rica Fishing Boats and Equipment

Boats

We offer only top of the line boats that are clean, well maintained, and ready to fish. The Captain and mates are all lifelong fisherman who take great pride in putting you on the maximum number of fish.

Equipment and Flies

Owning your own equipment is not a requirement. I personally keep 25-30 Loomis and Shimano fly rods with Penn reels available here at all times. I also hand tie my flies with the best hooks in colors and patterns that work.

If you choose to bring your own fly gear that's great, but bring the best you can find. I have seen many clients go home with only pieces remaining. Choose a good 8-10 weight rod for inshore fishing and a 10-12 weight rod for dorado and tuna. For sailfish a 12-13 weight rod is perfect. For marlin, a high quality 14-16 weight rod is encouraged. I recommend 300-400 yards of backing on all of your reels, and a good supply of 40, 60, and 80 pound tippet material. Tube flies should be 4-13' in length, with lots of sharp hooks.

Offshore Fly Fishing in Costa Rica

Costa Rica can be an unbelievable and even humbling experience for fly fisherman of all calibers. Chasing billfish offshore with a fly rod is one of the most thrilling experiences any fisherman could ever encounter. Imagine a 100 pound sailfish or even a 300-400 pound blue marlin chasing your fly at the back of the boat in all out attack mode. Better yet, imagine hooking that fish and watching it tail dance across the blue water of the Pacific Ocean. In Costa Rica, these dreams can become your reality.

Fly-fisherman can catch six to ten sailfish on an average day and twice that on a great day. Quite often they come into the teasers in multiples. Many times I have witnessed up to eight sailfish within casting range of the boat. My fondest memory is the day we had over 90 sailfish swimming around the boat. At one point, we had all of our fly rods hooked up on fish, and had more sailfish biting on teasers at the side of the boat. It was absolute pandemonium, but we managed to land all four of those fish.

Fish where the fish are!!!
I'll help you catch them with the best boats and Captains available!!!

Blue marlin average between three and five hundred pounds, and I have seen them up to eight or nine hundred pounds. Black marlin can weigh over one thousand pounds. In a day of fishing, we often see a few marlin. On a four day fishing trip with Bobby McGuiness, we landed nine marlin and missed several more. In one day alone, we raised 17 marlin!

Fishing offshore, not only do we catch billfish, but we often catch dorado and tuna as well. We have landed numerous dorado over 50 pounds with fly rods, and as many as 12 in one spot without putting the boat back in gear.

Tuna is another great fish to catch on a fly. It is not uncommon to run into a school of hungry tuna up to 20 pounds ready to chase your fly. Even the pickiest tuna will take a swipe at one my tube flies. We have landed over 20 tuna in a matter of minutes on fly rods.

Inshore Fly Fishing in Costa Rica

Roosterfish, Snapper, Tuna, Yellow Tail, Horse Eye Trevally , Mackerel, Snook, Wahoo

Roosterfish is likely going to be your main target, but while chasing roosterfish any species may show up. Roosterfish light up all different colors and their long comb stands up as they terrorize anything in their path. Seeing them attack a fly on the surface is one of a fly fisherman's greatest rewards.

Fly Fishing - Caribbean

Tarpon - Snook

Tarpon are unparalleled in their jumping and fighting ability and there is no place better in the world than the Rio Colorado River. Here you will find awesome sight fishing and fly fishing opportunities. The fish are huge, high flying, and abundant.

On our last trip in November, it wasn't a matter of getting them to bite, more a matter of landing them. Many times we had two or three on at once, and felt lucky if we could manage to land one. After boating 26 tarpon one day, we were ready to head into the river to try our luck with the snook.

Why Fish with us

I have spent the last fifteen years fly-fishing Costa Rica, and have personally fished with a number of Captain's up and down the coast. This experience has taught me that when it comes to fly fishing, not all Captains are created equal. We only use Captains with demonstrated knowledge and success of fly fishing for billfish.

Whether you want to chase billfish or tarpon, please come down and let me help you catch the fish of a lifetime!
