San Juan River Fly Fishing Guide for Trout in New Mexico.
San Juan River Fly Fishing
The San Juan River is located in northwestern New Mexico, about 1 1/4 hour drive from Lone Wolf Lodge, just south of the Colorado/New Mexico line. The San Juan, below Navajo Lake dam, is a tailwater fishery with mostly rainbows averaging 14" - 20". Cutthroats, browns and cuttbows (rainbow/ cutthroat hybrids) reside in some runs and fish to 28" are possible.
Flies are generally small, 18-24 but at times larger San Juan Worm style flies are the pattern of choice. Most action is under the surface on nymph patterns. Occasionally we can find a few trout that are keying on dry flies. If you're real lucky and we hit the river on a day when the ants are active ... it will blow your mind! Using 3-5 pound tippets the San Juan's strong fish will test even the most skilled angler. The river can be fished year-round with water temperatures range from the mid to low 40's. Early spring, summer and fall are generally the best times. Late spring sees increased flows from the lake, up to 5,000 cfs. That makes wading difficult. We can arrange for float trips during high water times.
Included in a Trip
Guided trips on the San Juan include transportation to and from the lodge (up to 4 anglers), lunch for full day outings, an experienced, capable guide, all the flies and terminal tackle. Fishing More Than One Day Sometimes our anglers want to fish the Juan more than one day but do not wish, or cannot afford, to hire a guide for the extra days. During the first day of fishing you can learn a lot about the San Juan, the style of fishing and some of our favorite spots. We encourage our clients to tell us if they wish to test their skills and knowledge without a guide for any additional days. We'll do our best to help you do that. Beginners or Novices Don't be intimidated by the idea of learning to flyfish. It's really not as hard as you might think. About 75% of our clients have never tried flyfishing before taking this trip. We are happy to provide lesson, free of charge while on the river. Our goal is to help you have fun and catch some trout. Style does not count nor does it catch fish. Just wading this beautiful river is an adventure to many anglers. We don't guarantee you will net a big one but we're 100% sure you'll have a great time. You Don't Have Any Flyfishing Gear? No problem. We have a number of rods and reels available for you to use - free of charge. And we have a fair selection of waders and wading boots - it's likely we'll have your size. If not, boots and waders can be rented for a nominal amount at a shop near the river.
