The Legendary "Rio Grande" Tierra del Fuego, Chile
The headwaters of the Rio Grande lie in the rolling hills of Chilean Tierra del Fuego. The "Grande" is nourished by several other rivers like the "Riveros" that drains Lynch Lake and the "White River" that drains crystal clear water from White lake into the Rio Grande. Then there is the "Meandrazo River" with its turbulent headwaters that changes to a mostly slow and meandering river with high cliffs and deep pools before it reaches the Rio Grande. These waters are mainly brown trout habitat. The biggest fish are Sea Run Brown Trout. These fish are born in the rivers and migrate out to the Atlantic Ocean to feed and grow to huge proportions. The average "Sea Run" is about 5.5 Kilos (12Lbs) but there are some monsters up to 14 Kilos (30 lbs), which is the record at this time for our operation. These fish will run up the river and return to the sea several times in their lifetime to spawn.
The rivers are also home to large numbers of resident brown trout. These fish are brightly colored and hard fighting opponents. They run up to 24" and around 5 Lbs. The Rio Grande is considered one of the top five trout fishing destinations in the world and a good portion of the river is located in Chilean Tierra del Fuego. The fishing in Tierra del Fuego is challenging and remote with wind that can be very strong at times, but our guides are experts at getting you onto a section of the river where you can catch fish under any conditions. Tierra Del Fuego is a remote area but with modern air travel getting there is not a problem. This is an area that holds some of the biggest trout in the world and gives you the opportunity to catch the largest trout of your lifetime!
Fishing Lakes and Ponds
Fishing for wild trout in the lakes of Tierra del Fuego produces some of the most energetic and brightly colored fish found in still water. This fishing is very exciting and challenging on lightweight equipment in the 3 to 5 weight range. Dry fly fishing is available as well as streamer and nymph fishing, all with floating lines.
These lakes and ponds are full of beautiful wild trout. There are Rainbow, Brown, and Brook trout available. In some of the larger lakes all three species are present giving you the opportunity to catch all three types in one day!
Fish the large well known, but rarely fished, lakes like White (Lago Blanco), Lynch (Lago Lynch) and Lago Fagnano or fish secluded and private lakes and ponds like Police Lake (Lago Carabinero) Priest Lake (Laguna El Cura).
This type of fishing is the perfect complement to fishing the legendary Rio Grande River or the other pristine rivers of Tierra del Fuego.
