North Patagonia Fly Fishing Chile

Pedro and Carole have lived in Colorado since 1985. Pedro has be came an avid fly fisherman and is often joined by Carole on their western excursions. They also traveled quite often to Pedro’s homeland of Chile, South America. Pedro’s love for Chile and it’s people has not been diminished by his years in the United States, and in fact their frequent visits to Chile have only grown the same feelings in Carole.

This love for the country and the love of the sport along with the fact that Pedro speaks fluent Spanish, is an experienced fly fisherman, knows the country, it’s people and it’s food are all reasons that they are exited to offer this fly fishing travel package to you. They hope that you will join them for a trip that will be long remembered.

Fly Fishing Rio Puelo Region de los Lagos Chile

Come experience Chile’s pristine fishing in the heart of “Region de los Lagos,” the Lake District.” This South American fishing experience will be one that is long remembered for its uncrowded, unspoiled rivers, streams and lakes, in remote areas where the spectacular scenery is unsurpassed. As memorable will be the gracious hospitable Chilean people, the fresh food and famed wines they serve.

The “Lake District” is 700 miles or 90 minutes jet flight from Chile’s capital Santiago. This is a region that has snow capped volcanoes that tower over the landscape, lush rain forests and mild temperatures with unrivaled fishing.

Chilean rivers begin their descent high in the Argentina Andes cascading through rain forest to the lakes, rivers, streams, lagoons and bocas below, eventually finding their way to the Pacific Ocean. In your pursuit for the perfect adventure this region offers bountiful waters and fishing options.

Our packages include floating the Rio Puelo , as well as the option of fishing Rio Manso, Rio Puelo Alto and Rio Ventisqueros, Puelo Chico, Lake Tagua Tagua, the estuary and some lagoons along the Rio Puelo. The abundant fish and hatches will make this a destination you’ll want to return to.

The Fishing

Fishing in this area is both rewarding and satisfying and we offer individually planned trips that will be dictated by your preferences, water conditions and weather patterns. We present to you a variety of options to choose from: float fishing, bank and wading combination.

The focus is on floating the freestone rivers affording plenty of opportunities to disembark and wade gravel bars and sandbanks. Frequent stops allow the fisherman to thoroughly work compelling pools, runs and riffles from strategic positions that offer you the advantage. The variety of resources in the area allow broad flexibility in designing a rewarding program in response to whatever conditions may prevail on any given day. The emphasis for fishing will be on Wooly buggers, streamers with a sinking tip line, as well as dry flies and nymphs.

The Fish

Trout were introduced to Chilean waters around 1900. The existence of rich sources of insect life has allowed the trout to do exceptionally well, firmly establishing itself and reproducing in regular cycles.

Brown and Rainbow trout are the most prevalent fish in the area. Sea trout is the slivery migratory form of the Brown trout, which enters the sea at about two years old but returns to rivers to spawn. The Steelhead is Rainbow trout that migrate to sea before returning to rivers to spawn, or live in lakes and move into streams to spawn.

The fish are wild and large and the fisherman has moments rarely seen elsewhere. The size can range from one to ten pounds and it is not unusual to pursue trophy size trout, especially if the “sea-runs” are in. You may encounter Coho and Atlantic salmon in both the lakes and the rivers depending on seasonal timing. Plus Kings/Chinooks, Salmo Salar/Atlantic are appearing in the Rio Puelo.

The Season

Since seasons are reversed, United State’s December is Chile’s June, this makes for an ideal winter getaway. The inland fishing season in Chile opens September 1st, and closes on the first Sunday in May. Peak season is January to March, but fishing can be excellent throughout the entire season. Neither shots nor a visa is required to visit Chile.

The Guides

The guides that are provided for you are professional and courteous. Most of them are natives of this region and are outstanding guides who know the area and are skilled at reading the waters. Your guides will speak basic English and you shouldn’t have any problems communicating with them.

The Flies

The Principal food source of Browns and Rainbows in southern Chile commonly is a small freshwater crayfish called Pancora. In imitating the Pancora the most successful flies are lightly weighted crayfish imitations tied on #4 – 8 hooks. Next in preference would be sparsely tied black, or olive or brown wooly buggers. Large stone and caddis nymphs can also be effective.
