Fishing for World Record Peacock Bass while staying on the most luxurious yacht in Brazil’s Amazon!

While fishing the second week of February, 2010 with Captain Peacock Expeditions on the upper Rio Negro, Bill Gassmann of Des Moines, Iowa caught a huge 28 lb Peacock Bass that is expected to break the long standing IGFA 27 lb All Tackle World Record caught by Doc Lawson in 1994. Gassmann's 28 lb. fish was 37" long with a girth of 25".

peacock fishingThe Fishing: Doc Lawson’s long standing 27 lb world record Peacock Bass was caught in 1994 on the Rio Negro river system just a couple of years after sport fishing for this hard fighting fish became available in the early 1990’s.  Although 25 & 26 lb fish have not been unusual in this fishery over the last 16 years, many people believed that with the increased fishing pressure the popularity this fishery of Brazil’s Amazon black water Rio Negro and its tributaries has generated, that Doc’s 27 lb record would never be broken.  The government of the state of Amazonia had worked hard during the last decade to maintain the quality of the fishery by reducing the impact of commercial fishing and promoting “catch & release” sport fishing.  When Bill hooked the huge male speckled Peacock, fishing with a Luhr Jensen Woodchopper top water lure, he made believers of the skeptics.

Fishing 2 anglers per 17 foot carpeted aluminum bass boats, with the experienced guides of the Captain Logan mother boat, anglers can expect to catch 30 – 50 Peacocks a day per boat in the 6 – 19 lb class as well as having an opportunity at the 20 lb trophy Peacocks.  The Peacock Bass are famous for their ability to snap 50 lb braided Kevlar line, not only to straighten heavy duty 4/0 treble hook but the ability to tear the hooks completely out of the heavy duty top water and subsurface hooks used to catch these fish.  Peacocks are known for their vicious, heart stopping top water strikes that you will never forget.  The first seconds after a Peacock smashes your lure, you are quite often wondering exactly who is catching who!  Peacocks will aggressively hit top water lures, jerk baits, jigs and spoons and are normally caught on heavy duty bait casting equipment.

Peacock Bass are the fly fisherman's new frontier as they will readily hit big poppers, Dahlberg Divers, Deceivers & Clouser patterns.  Fly rods in the 9 or 10 wt class and 50 lb leaders are a necessity!  Bring 2 fly rods with you, as Peacocks have the ability to turn 2 piece rods into 4 or 5 piece rods in short order.  In addition to the 3 species of Peacocks, anglers have an opportunity to catch several species of Piranha, Aruana (a prehistoric fish that will spend as much time out of the water as in it once you sink a hook into them), Traira (looking like a mullet with a mouth full of triangle teeth that look like they came out of meat grinder), Bicuda that look like a freshwater barracuda, and several species of catfish weighing upwards of 200 lbs!

peacock fishingAccommodations: The Captain Logan is a 95 foot long, 20 foot wide all aluminum air conditioned yacht with advanced navigation plus satellite television, internet and phone communications systems.  It has 6 double occupancy cabins with bunk beds featuring private baths & hot water, on board home theater, daily laundry service, beautiful dining rooms, and a cocktail salon featuring an open bar with premium beverage service including beer, wine and liquor.  All rooms on the yacht enjoy 6.5 – 7 foot ceilings making the Captain Logan one of the most luxurious, comfortable & safe mother boats operating in the Amazon.  American educated Brazilian national Leonardo Leao, co-owner of Captain Peacock Expeditions, is your host on the Captain Logan.
