Belize offers a World Class fishery. If you are interested in sight fishing for Permit, Tarpon, Bonefish or Snook, Belize is your destination. Belize’s coast offers hundreds of fishing flats and miles upon miles of coral reef from Ambergris Caye in the north to Placencia in the south. The flats and reef combine with endless mangroves to produce large quantities of small crabs, shrimp and bait fish that attract the larger sport fish. This vibrant ecosystem provides a wide variety of fish species and a haven for hunting the “Big Four” game fish. Around Belize City
This area provides a year-round population of tarpon, bonefish, snook and permit. Tarpon can be found in the rivers and creeks near the city as well as cruising the flats. There is a strong concentration of bonefish and snook, and the permit are plentiful on the right tides. It is not unlikely to catch a “Grand Slam” within a few hours fishing near Belize City.
20 miles northeast of Belize City between the mainland and the reef lies Ambergris Caye. The Caye is better known for its busy city of San Pedro. Aside from the bars, clubs and tourists of San Pedro, Ambergris Caye offers a fantastic bonefish population. It’s not uncommon to see hundreds of tailing bonefish in just one morning session. In addition, there are beautiful white flats around this Caye to hunt schools of permit that feed on the changing tides.
This area south of Ambergris Caye provides one of the most diverse fisheries in Belize. There are many large flats and lagoons for bonefish. You can search for juvenile tarpon and snook around the mangroves or head out to the reef to hunt for 30-pound permit and 100-pound tarpon. On the “Tarpon Highway” or “Miami Beach” you can spot tarpon, permit, barracuda and cobia swimming towards you over powder white sand from a quarter of a mile away.
Robinson Point and south to Placencia
Robinson Point is located 5 miles south of Belize City. The fishing grounds around Robinson Point contain large rolling tarpon and fantastic permit fishing. On a good day you can expect 20 to 30 shots at permit. The fishing grounds from Robinson Point south past Dangriga to Placencia are considered to hold the largest concentration of permit in the world. If you are dedicated to targeting permit, this World Class spot offers your best chance at landing a lifetime Trophy.
