Andros Island Fishing Lodge

In the beginning there was hope, Dick Birch's hope for a simple place, healthy life and lots of friendly people. Then there was Small Hope -- the Bay -- named, some say, by the pirate Morgan who said that it was a "small hope" that anyone would find the treasure that he buried there.

Then there was Small Hope Bay Lodge, the place that grew out of the hope and was built on the Bay that hid treasure and became the place that Dick built.

Andros Island Fishing Lodge

Small Hope Bay Lodge is an informal all-inclusive holiday resort that focuses around the central lodge built of coral rock and Andros pine. Comfortable couches and throw-pillows create a friendly home-like atmosphere. The Lodge houses a dining area, lounge/bar area (open bar), game room and reading room.

There is also a small boutique on the premises, a separate building for office administration and guest services and a staffed laundry facility. There is an outdoor patio bar and dining area for summer-night barbecues. For non-fishing activities bikes, kayaks, windsurfers, nature trails, snorkeling from shore, and 2 small sailboats are all available and included in your all-inclusive rate. Scuba diving, snorkeling, and eco-tours are available for an additional fee.

There are no phones (one phone/fax/internet for guest use in the office), no newspapers and no TVs. Emphasis is on a natural environment with relaxing, low-impact lifestyle. There is no dress code -- bare feet, T-shirts, sarongs, anything (except neckties) is acceptable.

Rooms:

Twenty-one rooms in cottages located directly on the beach, each handbuilt of coral rock and Andros Pine with overhead ceiling fans (half of the rooms have air-conditioning), locally made furniture, decorated in Androsia Batik fabrics, and all with a view of the sea. Each has private toilet/shower facilities and is fully tiled. King-size beds and single beds are available. There are four two-bedroom cottages for families, as well as a special "honeymoon cottage." All are shaded by palms and located on the Bay. To the north of the cottages is a separate secluded swimming beach.

Andros is laced with thousands of miles of inland waterways and fishing flats. North, Middle and South Bights cut right through the island, east to west, creating a natural access to even more flats on the west side of the island. These provide world-class conditions for fly fishermen in pursuit of bonefish and tarpon.

Andros Island, with its 140-mile long reef and its extensive inland flats offers serious challenges to spincasters and fly fishermen. Small Hope Bay Lodge has its own in-house guides and boat, plus a team of the best independent guides to offer Bonefishing, Reef Fishing, and Deep Sea Fishing.

• The Joulters: Wide open fishing flats in North Andros. Approximately one-hour drive each way. $90 round-trip transportation fee.
  
• Stafford Creek/London Creek: Dark bottom creek with good wading ocean flats. Approximately 30-minute drive each way. $75 round-trip transportation fee.
  
• Fresh Creek: Light bottom creek with good ocean flats. Approximately ten-minute drive each way (best option for half-day fishing excursions.) No transportation fee.
  
• North Bight: Wide open area with cays, goes straight through island to west side. Approximately 45 minute drive each way. $75 round-trip transportation fee.

We at Small Hope Bay Lodge believe it takes more than world-class conditions to have a world-class fishing experience. Sure, we have bonefish. Great schools of them and thousands of miles of flats. Tarpon, too. Serious fly fishermen come here and try to keep it all to themselves. We have great reef fishing, Grouper school in December and January, mutton snapper run in the summer.
