Hoonah Alaska fishing charters and whale watching
Hoonah Alaska Fishing Charters
A visit to Hoonah, Alaska should not be considered complete unless you have spent some time on the water enjoying the spectacular scenery, unmatched whale watching and wildlife viewing, or superior saltwater fishing. Glacier Wind Charters is a locally owned and operated Hoonah Alaska fishing charter business that has been providing visitors with exceptional and memorable Hoonah Alaskan experiences since 1995. Our tours originate from the harbor in Hoonah, Alaska located one mile from the Icy Strait Point cruise port.
Hoonah Alaska Fishing Charter The Glacier Wind
Our boat is a 35' down east lobster yacht world renowned for their sea keeping abilities and soft ride even in rough water. Built to work boat standards in Maine, we purchased the boat in 2004 in Portland, Maine and had it trucked across the country to Anacortes, Washington. After a short time in a yard there where some refit work was done to make it ready for charter, we ran the boat from Anacortes to Hoonah.
The boat has a spacious cabin as well as a very roomy after deck from which everyone can comfortably watch the whales and/or fish. The head(restroom) is second to none. The cabin is heated and is always a warm place to get out of the elements on those special "Southeast Alaska days." The Glacier Wind is meticulously maintained and cleaned. You will find the boat to be exceptionally comfortable for up to six.
Hoonah Alaska Whale Watching Kohola
New for the 2012 season the Kohola will be our primary whale watching boat. A 32' catamaran, the Kohola will afford our guests a full 360 degree walkaround deck from which to view and photograph the whales and wildlife. Custom designed and built by Captain Shawn, our comfortable cabin provides ample seating for six and a warm place to enjoy the travel time out and back to the whale viewing areas and get out of the rain. The boat has a spacious restroom as well. The catamaran hull is exceptionally stable and provides a smooth and comfortable ride while we travel in search of the whales and other wildlife. Additonally, the improved speed and quietness of the Honda outboard motors will reduce our travel time significantly, increasing the time we are able to spend enjoying the wildlife.
Hoonah Alaska Salmon and Halibut Fishing
Hoonah Alaska Salmon Fishing
Salmon begin arriving in the waters of Icy Strait in May with the first of the spawner King salmon. This early run is usually gone by mid June, but feeder Kings remain all summer in varying numbers. Pink and Chum salmon join the run in late June, and are followed by the Silvers in early to mid-July. The salmon season peaks in late August when all four species are available in their greatest numbers.
The shores near Hoonah, our home port are proven, superior Salmon fishing areas and we generally travel less than twenty minutes to find a great spot to fish. All gear is provided and fishing licenses are available for purchase on board the boat. Our boat, Glacier Wind, is a downeast Maine lobster boat equipped with everything necessary to assure you of the very best fishing experience possible. The price of your tour includes the cleaning and filleting of all fish you retain. We will deliver your fillets to the Hoonah Fish Company for shipment to your home via Fed Ex for cruise guests or as carry-on luggage for multi-day guests. Vacuum sealing, freezing and shipping charges are additional costs.
Hoonah Alaska Halibut Fishing
Halibut are in season June through September. We generally are fishing within 15-30 minutes of leaving the harbor and enjoy excellent success. Many days the whales are feeding around the boat while we fish.
You will be fishing aboard the Glacier Wind, our fully rigged and loaded downeast lobster yacht. All gear and tackle are provided, you supply the muscle!!
*Beginning in 2012 the per person bag limit is one halibut 45" or less in length or over 68" in length. This is a significant improvement from the 2011 bag limit.
Hoonah Alaska Whale Watching Charters
Glacier Wind Charters provides customized small group tours aboard Kohola, our specially designed whale watching catamaran. For our cruise ship guests, we offer several departure options beginning one-half hour after the scheduled arrival of the ship in port at Icy Strait Point, the privately owned cruise destination located one mile from the city of Hoonah. Our tours are 3 and 1/2 hours in duration and will have a maximum of six guests so you will have a huge amount of space to spread out on the boat and enjoy an uncrowded relaxing whale watching adventure.
Icy Strait is home to one of the largest summer populations of humpback whales found in Alaska and the whale watching is second to none. We regularly travel to Pt. Adolphus, an area where the whales and other marine mammals congregate to feed on the huge schools of bait fish concentrated in the cold currents that meet in this rich area. Humpback whales can often be seen feeding at the surface using their unique "bubble nets." Singles and pairs of whales are often spotted using this unique method of catching fish along the shoreline between Icy Strait Point and the harbor in the town of Hoonah. On occasion we are able to find a super-pod (as many as twenty individuals) bubble feeding near town. The bubble feeding technique is used in only a few areas of the world and the beaches near Hoonah are one of these locations. Along with feeding, the whales engage in all sorts of frolic; breaching, slapping their flippers, waving their tails and exchanging trumpets, groans and grumbles. You will enjoy hearing what the whales are "saying," with our onboard hydrophone.
