Kodiak Island Fishing Lodge

GUS WELCOMES YOU

Gus Gustafson has lived on Kodiak Island since 1979. He made his living as a commercial fisherman and knows every bay, cove, and pass the island has to offer. Gus can tell you where and how to get fish, game, as well as entertainment. He is a terrific host and can show you the Alaskan way to cook whatever you may bring home.

Kodiak Russian River Lodge is located on the edge of the Alaskan Wilderness boasting incredible mountain views and easy access to a variety of outdoor activities including fishing hunting and sight-seeing.

The bed and breakfast is surrounded on three sides by spectacular mountains and on the fourth by Woman's Bay (part of the Gulf of Alaska).

The area, locally known as Bell's Flats, is located close to fishing and hunting areas south of town. We are 1/2 block off the Chiniak Highway and walking distance to the Ocean, Sergeant Creek, Russian River, and the Rendezvous Bar and Grill. We are approximately 200 yards from the AC store; a small rural convenience store for gas, liquor, and assorted food items you may have forgotten in town.

Fishing Kodiak Island

Fishing in Kodiak, whether on the road system, ocean charter, back country ATV or air access to remote sites has the real possibility of spoiling you for going to your favorite fishing spots around home. When you stand in a stream with fish jumping over your line and tagging your fly or lure with nearly every cast, it is hard to keep from laughing and smiling to yourself all day long. Whether those fish on the river are:

- 35 to 40 pound 'cookie cutter' kings on the South End of Kodiak
- on a charter boat 1/2 hour from the dock in Kodiak
- 10 to 18 pound coho salmon on Kodiak's road system rivers, that want to destroy your tackle
- Sockeye salmon early in June ripping line off your reel for run after run
- finally pools in the local rivers filled with upwards of 6000 bright pink salmon nailing every cast with chum salmon interspersed to surprise you with their heavy fight

...you will have a tendency to forget what fishing was like around your home.

Now add to that the opportunity to hit the ocean with one of our excellent charter skippers in search of heavy slugging halibut, ling cod and other bottom fish, as well as another opportunity for king and coho salmon on the boats and you'll see what I'm talking about.

You catch it, we'll process it for a fee. Bring us a good product and we will make sure you take home an excellent finished product, fillet, vacuum sealed, frozen and boxed for shipping. We can ship your catch home so you don't even have to pack it through the airport.

Hunting

Hunting on Kodiak, Afognak and Raspberry Islands can be a rewarding experience. Deer, Kodiak bear and Mountain Goats are found on Kodiak, while Afognak and Raspberry Islands feature deer and bear, as well as Elk in sufficient numbers for hunting. Deer season is long enough time to harvest your deer. Limit is one deer on the road system and that season spans from August 1st through October 31st. The non-road system season extends to the end of the year.

Bear Hunting in Kodiak

If you are from out of state, guide service is mandatory. Locals do not need to hire a guide but you must know the regulations and the legalities of the area you intend to hunt. You should not even consider bear hunting if you are not an expert experienced hunter. Kodiak Bears are incredible animals and can be very dangerous. Also, don't shoot anything that you can't pack out. Kodiak abounds with wildlife, please hunt efficiently, effectively and do not be wasteful. Respect Kodiak's staggering beautiful environment and have a good hunt.

- Bear: April 1 - May 15 & October 25-November
- Elk (Raspberry Island): October 1 - November 30
- Elk (SW Afognak): September 25 - October 22
- Elk (SW Afognak) Permit Hunt: October 23 - November 30
- Goat: August 20 - October 25 & Permit Hunt: November 1 - December 15
- Deer (On Road): August 1 - October 31
- Deer (Off Road): August 1 - December 31

Give us a try in Kodiak, and we'll see you smile.
