Homer Halibut Fishing Alaska

Homer is world renown for it's halibut fishing. It is referred to as the "Halibut Capital of the World". If you are looking to catch halibut, there is no better place in the world to fish than in Homer. But remember, Homer is not only known for it's halibut fishing. Homer is also famous for its charm and beauty. See our Homer, Alaska page for more details.

We're confident that you'll catch halibut when out with us. Halibut, often referred to as barn doors, are a great fighting sport fish of the sea, and are a delicious fish as well. Prized for their great taste and texture, halibut are a great treat. Reaching as much as 500 lbs., the largest sport caught Halibut weighed in at 459 lbs.

There is no doubt that halibut are one of the prized catches of the sea, and there is no better place to catch halibut than in Homer, Alaska.

The Pacific halibut (Hippoglossus stenolepis) was called “haly-butte” in Middle English, meaning the flatfish to be eaten on holy days.

Halibut are more elongated than most flatfishes, the width being about one-third the length. Small scales are imbedded in the skin. Halibut have both eyes on their dark or upper side. The color on the dark side varies but tends to assume the coloration of the ocean bottom. The underside is lighter, appearing more like the sky from below. This color adaptation allows halibut to avoid detection by both prey and predator.

The halibut taken by sport anglers are generally 15 to 20 pounds in weight; however, fish over 150 pounds are frequently caught. A fish must weigh at least 200 pounds to qualify for the state’s trophy fish program. We use a stout saltwater fishing gear to fish for halibut. The effort and the interest in catching these delicious fish is increasing each year. In Alaska, halibut are second only to king salmon in sport angler preference.
