Brown Trout Fishing Trip

The Arnarvatnsheidi is a huge moorland with lakes, streams and rivers that provide fabulous trout fishing and is framed with a stunning panorama of mountain ranges and glaciers, the most notable one being the Eiriksjökull glacier.

Weighed nymphs are extremely popular in these lakes and streams and in recent years, when conditions allow, dry flies are often up to the task. Spinners and Ripala have worked extremely well, so bring them along if you like.

Most of the lakes abound in char and brown trout and some lakes are only accessible on foot or by 4x4 vehicles. The lakes, rivers and streams are full of good size Arctic char and brown trout.

Salmon Fishing East Rangá

iceland fly fishingEast Ranga had an amazing season in 2008, finishing second after West Ranga with 7013 salmon caught.  East Ranga is divided into nine beats with two rods on a beat and has a fair rotation system utilising the 22 km stretch to the maximum benefit for each angler. This allows plenty of space per rod and a nice variety of marvelous pools. The average weight of salmon is 7-8 lbs.

One guide per two rods is recommended for best coverage of pools, knowledge of the river, appropriate tackle and best fly patterns.

Mountain Lake Trout Fishing

Mountain fishing in Iceland is probably one of the best hidden secrets of fly fishing in Iceland. If you like magnificent scenery, stunning mountains and hard volcanic landforms then this is the place for you. Here you can catch hard fighting Char and colorful Brown Trout in mountainous lakes or craters plus some mountain rivers as well. Here you fish with less pressure in the marvelous Icelandic hidden lakes and rivers.

What to expect the fishing to be like: May and June is PRIME TIME to catch the huge trout of the lake and the fish should be hungry after long winter in Iceland, normally best time of the day to catch the big fish is just before sunset. We will be fishing from the shore and focusing on brown trout, there are also nice char in the lake, June is the prime time for the char.

The fish in the lake
fishingRelatively very few faunal species are found in Iceland. The main reason is, of course, the distance between Iceland and the mainland, but also the relatively short time since the end of the last Ice Age. Lake Þingvallavatn is no exception, and in the lake live three of the five species of freshwater fish found in Iceland: brown trout, Arctic char and the three-spine stickleback. It’s said that these fish became isolated in the lake in the wake of the last ice age when the terrain rose at the south end of Þingvallavatn. These three species are a living testimony to how the evolution of species occurs in nature, as over a period of 10,000 years they have adapted themselves to various habitats in the lake. The constant, regular influx of groundwater into Lake Þingvallavatn, together with a very varied habitat, has created good conditions for fish and other life forms in the lake, to which they have adapted even more.  Join us for Reykjavik Fly Fishing Iceland.
